The role
We are seeking a full time Professor in the Department of Computer Science and University Academic Director of Research Computing.
As Professor, you will be an established scientist with significant contributions to at least one area of Computer Science, including but not limited to High Performance Computing, Distributed Computing, Software Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Cyber-security, Healthcare, Environment and Artificial Intelligence. You will be an innovative and visionary researcher with a strong and current record of research funding and international quality publications. We are particularly interested in individuals whose work demonstrates a high level of originality and rigor, contributing new insights and methodologies that push the boundaries of Computer Science. The post holder will be a leading international figure with the ability to attract world-class academics to their research group.
As Academic Director of Research Computing, you will provide senior academic leadership and strategic direction for the research computing landscape at Exeter. By working with both academic user communities and professional services, this role will lead the development of a strategy for advanced research computing (to include high-performance and mid-level compute, along with an effective support model), helping to position the university to take maximum advantage of new technologies, agree the OLA (Operating Level Agreement) need required by the research community and to realise opportunities for efficiency gains and increased cost recovery.
Whilst holding a broad remit, the post holder will engage with stakeholders around university strategic initiatives of particular relevance, such as the DPVCs leading on the Accelerating Data Science and AI (ADA) investment, and the Director of the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
The Academic Director role carries a workload allocation of 0.4 FTE, supported from the ADA post allocation to Computer Science. The expectation is that the appointment will be made on a 3-year basis with the option for renewal for a second term.
Through our Accelerating Data Science and AI (ADA) Programme, we are seeking to grow our core capabilities in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, by initially investing >£25M in a significant number of new academic posts across Maths of AI, Core Machine Learning, Computer Vision, AI for Healthcare, Environmental Intelligence, Datacentric Engineering and Software Engineering. We expect to follow this up with further investment across the faculties to put Data Science and AI at the heart of all of the programmes we deliver at the university.
We are looking to recruit research leaders in each of these fields to help us deliver on our goals of establishing Exeter as one of the leading places to work on cross-disciplinary Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, with particular focus on our core strengths and seeking to build a Greener, Healthier and Fairer Society (Strategy 2030).
Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
