Infant Feeding Support Worker B3 - 1 post of 15hrs - WCH
The post holder will work within the infant feeding team in maternity services, which supports women and families during pregnancy and up to 28 days post birth. Families within our care may be within the maternity wards, special care baby unit, or within the community.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary team offering support to women and their families around infant feeding, which may be in the antenatal and/or the postnatal period. You will also be required to support staff with day-to-day activities relating to infant feeding and the Baby Friendly Initiative standards of care.
Main Duties of the Job
* Offer support and guidance with breastfeeding positioning and attachment.
* Undertake observation of breastfeeding and complete feeding assessments.
* Promote ongoing skin-to-skin for all mothers and babies.
* Support women with expressing colostrum and breastmilk including guidance on how to express, using and cleaning a breast pump, and storing breastmilk safely.
* Encourage responsive breastfeeding and responsive formula feeding as appropriate.
* Demonstrate and/or discuss how to safely make up artificial feeds when required.
* Signpost to leaflets on infant feeding on BadgerNet and discuss as appropriate.
* Support the Infant Feeding Lead Midwives with audits, which includes conversations with breastfeeding and formula feeding mothers.
* Monitor supplementation feeds on the ward.
* Act as mentor or preceptor to less experienced staff as required.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Care Certificate or the willingness and ability to undertake.
* NVQ 3 in care (or willingness to complete within one year of start date) or equivalent experience.
* Formal training in breastfeeding support.
* Teaching/education experience.
* Experience of undertaking audit.
Knowledge
* Recent experience of supporting women and families with infant feeding.
* Ability to demonstrate knowledge of breastfeeding management.
* Experience and enthusiasm for infant feeding.
* Experience of working with newborn babies.
* Previous band 3 care assistant in maternity or children's services or other relevant equivalent experience.
Skills
* Ability to prioritise work, organize own work and diary, and work independently.
* Computer literate and good literacy skills.
* Understanding of how to formulate/follow a care plan.
* Understanding the rationale for risk assessments and how to escalate concerns.
* Able to carry out clinical interventions as delegated by the multi-professional team and as agreed by local protocols.
* Able to deal with and manage confidential information.
* Able to understand and comply with detailed procedures.
* Ability to present factual questions to others where appropriate.
* Experience of running groups.
* Experience of teaching one to one or small groups.
Other Requirements
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen actively and effectively.
* Able to work flexibly, with a wide range of duties and with a high level of personal motivation.
* Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
* Have a sympathetic sensitive approach and be able to speak effectively to staff, colleagues, and clients.
* Ability to travel between the Trust's sites as required.
* Willingness to continually develop knowledge and skills.
