The International Relations Team is a busy unit responsible for strategically managing relations with EMBL member states and other major government and political stakeholders. The Team also coordinates EMBL’s involvement in several ESFRI projects, and works with partners in other International Research Organizations and global fora to build broad alliances and coalitions in support of science and the scientific endeavor. Your role The position reports to the Chief of International Relations. It works closely with the International Relations team and also with the EMBL-EBI leadership and relevant colleagues. The International Relations Officer will help fulfil EMBL’s mission to integrate life sciences across the member states through the development of strong collaborative links with relevant policy makers and key scientific stakeholders, in particular in the UK. They will also be responsible for supporting the Head of International Relations in the development and implementation of relations and activities with non-member state actors and international fora and organizations, such as for example WHO, COP/UNFCCC et al. Duties and Responsibilities Develop and maintain structured cooperation frameworks with relevant UK and international partners to support the organization goals and strategy. As agreed with the Chief of IR, connect, cultivate and enhance personal working relationships with key institutions, policymakers and policy influencers in UK, in other assigned member states and within relevant international organizations. Monitor and stay informed about relevant policymaking efforts in the UK; update and work collaboratively with other IR team members to ensure alignment of IR strategies and priorities. Represent the IR and EMBL by acting as liaison in relationships with internal and external partners in assigned countries/organizations. Related to the above, assemble written material such as briefings, memos, letters, fact sheets, reports and strategy documents; organize meetings and visits; prepare presentations and any other documentation as necessary. The role will require some evening and weekend work and occasional travel to other EMBL sites or external locations. This position will be based on campus in Hinxton with the flexibility to work from home, as per our hybrid working guidelines. You have Advanced university degree in international relations, political or social sciences Between 5-7 years of relevant work experience Knowledge of contemporary science policy issues and a good understanding of the UK political and science-policy environment is highly desirable and will be preferred The position requires outstanding organisational skills, good attention to detail, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, diplomatic approach, ability to work both independently and as part of team, and commitment to meet deadlines. Excellent command of written and spoken English A willingness to travel to our other European sites as required You may also have Knowledge of at least two additional European languages is advantageous. Contract length: 3 years, renewable to a maximum of 9 years Salary: Grade 5, monthly salary from £3,229 after tax, excl. pension contributions and health insurance.
