Facilities Management provides cost effective and efficient planning, design, construction, maintenance, safety, and security services throughout the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Facilities Management supports the fulfillment of VIMS tripartite mission of teaching, research, and advisory service.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Security Supervisor/Emergency Management Coordinator, the Lead Security Officer is responsible for the safety and welfare of faculty, students, staff, and visitors at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).
Core responsibilities include (but not limited to):
* Patrols the buildings and grounds at scheduled intervals to protect faculty, staff, students, and property.
* Responds to requests to unlock doors, accompany staff to their vehicles, and investigate problems.
* Ensures all doors and windows are properly secured and all building conditions are normal.
* Responds to fire alarm calls and resets alarm equipment as needed.
* Reports any facilities-related and unsafe campus conditions (including adverse weather) to supervisor and appropriate personnel.
* Communicates recommended action to those departments.
* Identifies unauthorized visitors and escorts them off of VIMS property.
* Reports all crimes in progress as well as suspicious/unruly individuals to Gloucester County Police.
* Assists in hiring, training, and mentoring both new and existing staff.
* Coordinates specific duties and patrol sectors for security personnel.
* Requests additional security employees during a shift when necessary. When requested, provides security support for special events and after-hours functions.
* Assumes responsibilities of the Security Supervisor during their absence.
Conditions of Employment
* This position is non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the fair labor standards act and University policy. May be subject to overtime as preapproved by supervisor.
* Position is considered essential personnel during times of campus emergencies or inclement weather, and when VIMS is closed.
* This is a restricted position subject to the continued availability of funding.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION:
* High School Graduate or Equivalent Virginia Driver’s License
* Certified Security Officer or the ability to obtain within 12 months
COMPETENCIES:
* Working knowledge of security and safety policies and procedures. Demonstrated skills in operating security vehicles, systems, and equipment.
* Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies at VIMS.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex information in lay terms.
* Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures as set forth in VIMS Security Standard Operating Procedures.
* Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize effectively, work well under pressure in a highly fluid environment, and adhere to time-sensitive deadlines.
* Flexibility in thinking, comfort with ambiguity, and the skill to develop recommendations in the absence of complete information.
* Basic computer proficiency including MS Office and web-based applications.
EXPERIENCE:
* Demonstrated experience developing productive relationships with local authorities, customers, and the general public.
* Substantive experience working in a related field, such as security guard, police officer, corrections officer, or park ranger.
Preferred Qualifications
EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES:
* Demonstrated experience working within a higher education organization.
* Experience working in an academic and/or research environment.
