Role Summary
The Robert Burns Ellisland Trust (RBET) seeks a highly skilled Project Manager to lead the Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne project, delivering significant conservation and adaptation works at Ellisland Museum and Farm. The post is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to players of the National Lottery and South of Scotland Enterprise.
1. Introduction
The Robert Burns Ellisland Trust (RBET) safeguards the 1788 farm designed and built by the poet Robert Burns on the banks of the Nith near Dumfries. The A listed steading is the best preserved of all the poet’s homes, the only one he built, and the place where he wrote a quarter of his musical output, including the international anthem to friendship, Auld Lang Syne.
The Robert Burns Ellisland Trust’s charitable purpose is as follows:
1. the advancement of education
2. the advancement of the arts, heritage and culture
3. the promotion of the life and works of Robert Burns
4. to maintain a museum and collections for the benefit of the public
Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne
In September 2024, our trust secured the offer of a development stage grant of up to £489,206 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne. In November 2024 we were awarded up to £313,000 from South of Scotland Enterprise towards the project. We expect to receive Permission to Start by January 2025.
2. The Brief
Robert Burns Ellisland Trust seeks to appoint a Project Manager for the duration of the Development Stage of Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne. The Project Manager will oversee recruitment and management of some key development stage consultants and be responsible for compliance, cost control, programme and payment claims during the Development Phase.
3. Required Outputs (Development Stage)
a. Project Coordination and Management
1. Prepare and manage the programme for the design, capital works, and activities using MS Project or similar software.
2. Assist the Project Director in coordinating and overseeing the work of all members of the Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne Project Team.
3. Work with the Project Board to issue contract briefs and ensure that tasks align with the overall deadlines for the mid-term review and delivery stage submission.
5. Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
1. A relevant degree or professional qualification in project management, heritage conservation, or a related field.
2. Demonstrable experience managing multi-disciplinary projects, ideally in a heritage or cultural context, including delivering RIBA3 stages.
3. Knowledge of UK and Scottish statutory and legislative requirements for listed buildings and conservation projects.
6. Management Structure
The Project Manager is managed on a day to day basis by the Project Director and will report to the Project Board and, where appropriate, the project board sub-committees.
7. Remuneration
This is a Freelance contract until April 2026. Over the course of 16 months the remuneration is worth £75,000 inclusive of any VAT. We will consider employing the Project Manager directly on a salary of £40,000 – £48,000.
