The Emergency Department is based at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester. We are a Trauma Unit with a helipad immediately adjacent which receives major trauma and other incoming patients from the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Due to its location and close vicinity of the helipad we see a disproportionate level of trauma for a department of this size. We have persistently been the top performing trauma unit within Wessex. The department has an 8 Consultant rota. There are 8 Specialty Doctors and 1 Higher Specialist Trainee in Emergency Medicine. The consultants provide a minimum of 12 hours shop floor cover daily and a 24 hour on call and trauma and stroke thrombolysis cover 7 days a week. There are also 18 junior doctors, and a well established majors nurse practitioner service within the department.
The hospital, opened in 1997, provides an excellent environment for patients and staff. The department sees over 43,000 patients annually with the activity increasing during the summer holiday season. There is excellent support from the other hospital specialties including anaesthetics, paediatrics, radiology, primary PCI in hours and 24/7 Stroke Thrombolysis.
The department is dedicated to supporting the development of their doctors and therefore study time and funding is available to successful applicant.
