Role Overview
Manage all incidents, accidents, and emergencies affecting the operational railway in liaison with colleagues in Network Rail, customer organizations, and other agencies.
Coordinate the response to all infrastructure and operational incidents, including recovery of normal train service, and manage relevant information and communication systems.
Develop and maintain good working relationships with Network Rail staff, train operators, contractors, and key industry partners to deliver effective responses and minimize disruption.
About the Role (External)
As part of the Route Control Team, you'll manage operational incidents affecting the route, ensuring safety, effectiveness, and timeliness. You will lead internal and external affected parties to re-establish network operations and minimize impacts on passengers and freight.
Key Accountabilities
1. Work during normal and disruptive times to deliver optimal service tailored to the needs of the rail industry and customers.
2. Manage response staff activities, including maintenance, operations, train operators, contractors, emergency services, and other partners, in response to incidents, escalating as necessary.
3. Disseminate accurate, concise, and timely information to train staff, Network Rail, passengers, and other stakeholders in accordance with standards and statutory requirements.
4. Maintain a daily log of operational safety, infrastructure, and performance events using appropriate systems.
5. Identify and classify infrastructure failures, managing and inputting data into FMS and other systems.
6. Coordinate short-notice variations to possession and isolation plans, and design and implement temporary and emergency speed restrictions.
7. Manage information from remote condition monitoring equipment, coordinating staff responses to alerts.
8. Support the development of emergency plans and resources in collaboration with the Network Delivery Manager and Train Running Controller.
9. Assist with VSTP train movements and setting up ‘gold command’/Incident Room during disruptions.
10. Demonstrate knowledge of operating procedures, rules, and regulations.
11. Possess experience within control environments, area operations, or infrastructure roles.
12. Understand fault management procedures and have good geographical and organizational knowledge of ICC-controlled areas.
13. Use Microsoft Office and control-specific software such as CCF, TMIS, P2v2, TRUST, TOPS, FMS, Nexus Alpha, and Alpha Page effectively.
14. Have working knowledge of the NRN system and its proper use, and familiarity with Train Operating Companies within the route.
15. Exhibit strong team working skills, decision-making abilities, and influence under pressure.
16. Understand the commercial and business aspects of Network Rail and TOCs.
17. Knowledge of railway systems related to train service delivery and experience in safety-critical communication environments.
18. Have a good understanding of customer flows and commercial issues on SWR and neighboring routes.
19. Apply effective decision-making tools and risk assessment techniques to prioritize incidents and achieve aligned goals.
