Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen due to the expansion of the Acute Oncology service at Newcastle NHS Trust to support 7-Day Acute Oncology Service. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and motivated nurse with extensive experience to support the evolving Acute Oncology Service. The post holder will be expected to provide expertise in the care and management of people with an Oncological or Hematological malignancy, presenting as a new diagnosis, experiencing complications of their cancer or cancer treatment.The ideal candidate will be an experienced nurse, already working at a senior Band 6 or 7 role, with extensive knowledge/experience in acute medicine, emergency department and or oncology/hematology nursing. Applicants should be keen to be involved in the development of the Acute Oncology Service and support the team lead with management and leadership duties. The post will primarily be based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital, but will be expected to work across site, reviewing patients in acute medicine at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The post requires the successful applicant to be self-motivated with excellent organisational, time management and leadership skills, a strong team working ethic and evidence of continuous professional development. Interview Date Monday 17 March 2025 37 Hours 30 Minutes/Week NO AGENCIES PLEASE Main duties of the job The post holder will be a senior member of the Acute Oncology Team, expected to provide early input of specialist care to oncology and hematology patients presenting with suspicion of a new diagnosis, complications of their cancer or cancer treatment. This role will consist of working with emergency Acute oncology pathways and involve working with the multi-disciplinary nursing, medical, administration and operational teams. The post holder will mainly be based on the assessment area in the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, working 8-8 across a 7-Day service. The typical working day would consist of clinically assessing patients who present acutely unwell with complications of their cancer treatment or malignancy, patient telephone triage (via the cancer helpline), education and training and support the Band 6 Acute oncology nurses and the wider directorate. The ongoing education of colleagues at all levels will be a central component of this role. The post holder will have responsibilities for assessing the clinical needs of the patient, assessing and monitoring patient conditions, have ability to determine clinical diagnosis and facilitate appropriate treatment. The post holder will apply a high level of autonomy and demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
