Job Title: Engineer
Advertised Salary: £36,000 - £41,500 (depending on experience) + car cash allowance (£4,680 p.a.) + benefits
Location: Remote, with regular travel across our network. See here:
We're the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water. Every role across the Trust plays its part in transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better, bringing wellbeing benefits to millions.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Engineer to join our Asset Management team in the Birmingham area of the West Midlands region.
As an Engineer, you will work as part of the supportive West Midlands asset management team but also be given an area of the waterway network to manage, providing hands-on experience in managing our historic infrastructure. You will be responsible for inspecting and assessing asset conditions, prioritising repairs and renewals, and supporting the operations team on minor and reactive repairs. You will act as a client throughout the project lifecycle and provide technical support to other Trust departments.
We are an ICE approved employer, providing structured learning and professional development support.
Location & coverage
Based from our Birmingham hub, this role is remote with attendance at hub spaces as needed for team collaboration. Regular travel across the canals and river navigations is required, and occasional national work may be necessary. The network is largely urban with areas awarded Green Flag status.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Our heritage includes over 8,500 structures across 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, many over 200 years old, still functioning as designed. As an Engineer, you will work with colleagues and partners to deliver work programmes and support asset strategy implementation, prioritising investments based on risk management.
Key accountabilities:
* Asset management for designated waterways.
* Conduct scheduled inspections, ensuring quality and timeliness.
* Prioritise defects based on risk.
* Define and support maintenance, repair, and renewal works, considering statutory, technical, operational, and customer needs.

* Support enquiries related to assets, providing relevant information.
* Design temporary works for minor maintenance as needed.
* Build relationships with local partners, regulators, and stakeholders to maintain and improve service levels.
* Participate in “Stand-by” and “Call-out” rotas as appropriate.
About you
You should enjoy teamwork and have a collaborative approach, while also being able to work independently. Engaging effectively across all levels of the organization and with external partners is essential.
Technical qualifications:
* Degree or HND in Civil Engineering or relevant technical discipline.
* Knowledge of historic infrastructure, preferably in water environments.
* Experience assessing infrastructure risk.
* Experience in cross-functional performance delivery.
* Negotiation skills with internal and external contacts.
* Ability to support other areas respecting business priorities.
* Strong written communication skills and ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences.
* Continuous Professional Development evidence.
* Proficiency in MS Office and personal computing.
* Valid UK driving license.
* Legal right to work in the UK.
* Membership of professional bodies like ICE or CIWEM at an appropriate level.
