The Barts Heart Centre is the biggest in the UK with its complement of 10 catherisation labs (5 of which are dedicated to Intervention) and 10 cardiothoracic theatres.
St Bartholomew’s Hospital is one of a group of hospitals – Barts Health NHS Trust – the group providing a huge range of clinical services to the population of East London, the City of London, and beyond.
Opportunities exist within all Barts Heart Centre departments to undertake research and education as a part of the Centre of Excellence Strategy of the Trusts.
Main duties of the job
This appointment is for a Consultant in Clinical pharmacology with a specialist interest in Hypertension. The post is based at both St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital. The post-holder will expand our team at the internationally renowned Bart’s BP
Centre of Excellence. The appointee will be joining the academic department of Clinical Pharmacology which has 2 full time academic consultants and 2 full time NHS consultants and Specialty Trainees. They will contribute to the departmental objectives based on excellence in clinical care, teaching and research.
The Clinical Pharmacology team manage both the Hypertension service (inpatient and outpatient) and have developed a further specialist interest in Cardiovascular Autonomic dysfunction including disorders such as Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (see below for further details). The Clinical Pharmacology department sits within the Cardiovascular Clinical
Academic Group Bart’s Health NHS Trust.
The post-holder will specialise in the investigation and treatment of complex BP disorders
working collaboratively with the other consultants in the department of Clinical Pharmacology.
We provide both secondary and tertiary level care for Hypertension. The department have also developed a specialist interest in Cardiovascular Autonomic dysfunction and run clinics for this at Bart’s hospital. If interested then training can be provided to the post holder to further
develop skills in this area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Delivery and organisation of evidence-based, direct clinical care to patients, through all parts of the department, sharing equally in the workload and involving a multi-disciplinary workforce; to support other members of staff in doing so also.
Provide clinical leadership, improve the patient experience and ensure the highest quality clinical care.
To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies.
To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in relevant NHS guidance and the Care Quality Commission, including the 18 weeks waiting time standard.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. MB BS, or equivalent
2. MRCP (UK) or equivalent
3. Full registration with GMC or CCT within 6 months of date of interview
4. Accreditation as a Hypertension Specialist of the British Hypertension Society
Desirable criteria
5. PhD / MD Thesis
6. Accreditation as a Hypertension Specialist of the European Society of Hypertension
Knowledge/Experience
Essential criteria
7. Widespread broad-based knowledge of all aspects of Blood Pressure regulation and therapy and cardiovascular medicine
8. Experience of the in-patient management of hypertensive patients to include obstetric/neurologic/neurosurgical and general medical emergencies (e.g. aortic dissection, hypertensive encephalopathy)
9. Parenteral management of hypertensive crises
Desirable criteria
10. Understanding of the novel developments in the field of hypertension and in particular the device-based therapy approaches
Training Expected
Essential criteria
11. Higher Specialist Training Clinical Pharmacology
12. Experience of training undergraduates and postgraduates
Desirable criteria
13. Experience of delivering education in therapeutics and designing teaching resources to cultivate the practice of safe prescribing

14. Ability to undertake and direct audit with demonstrable understanding of the impact and challenges this brings
