The Role
We have an exciting opportunity to work as part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Core Theme to provide operational, performance and financial management across a portfolio of translational research and associated activity.
As part of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre core team, you will lead on the performance, financial and operational management of the award and provide the key link between the BRC Core and individual research themes which it oversees. You will work closely with the BRC theme leads to ensure the BRC funding is used to deliver on agreed objectives and will ensure effective administrative and operational support is in place. Your role will ensure there are high levels of consistency, central control and oversight across the centre. The post will report to the NIHR BRC Chief Operating Officer and upwards to the NIHR BRC Director.
You will lead on financial management of the NIHR Newcastle BRC award and annual financial reporting to the NIHR, developing accurate financial forecasting and reporting and working with themes to ensure that annual NIHR spending requirements are met across the centre.
You will also lead the team undertaking annual reporting to the NIHR on the Newcastle BRC’s progress and oversee the management and continued development of information systems to collect data, information and knowledge across the partnership to demonstrate the performance and impact of NIHR Newcastle BRC.
The post is for a fixed term until 31/3/2028.
Responsibilities
* Lead the operational, performance and financial management of the NIHR Newcastle BRC across a portfolio of translational research and associated activity across the BRC research themes.
* Develop, enhance and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders of the BRC, including academics, clinicians, researchers, and staff across the University, partnering NHS Trusts and the NIHR.
* Design and monitor research programme reporting, including provision of regular reporting on performance and financial activity to the BRC Leadership Team.
* Apply professional expertise and judgement in the monitoring of projects, objectives and research theme activities to ensure that outputs are delivered to an acceptable standard and timeframe.
* Make a significant contribution to the writing and collating of information necessary for annual reporting to the NIHR.
* Identify potential risks or problems associated with delivery and expenditure through regular communication with research themes and project leads.
* Manage and monitor the BRC’s budget, forecast and financial reporting activities, ensuring compliance with specific requirements and liaising with relevant teams within the BRC partnership.
* Manage complex networks of relations with Theme Leads and partners on financial, contractual and personnel issues across the BRC to ensure productive strategic relationships are made and maintained.
* Oversee and advise on the management and continued development of information systems to collect data, information and knowledge across the NHS Trust and University that will contribute to annual reporting requirements and demonstrate the performance and impact of the NIHR Newcastle BRC.
* Develop and coordinate processes for running internal funding competitions and schemes across the NHS Trust and University associated with the NIHR Newcastle BRC.
* Represent the BRC at internal and external meetings as required.
* Support other BRC activity as required including public and patient involvement, training and industry focused activity.
* Deputise for the BRC Chief Operating Officer as required.
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience (essential)
* Extensive project management experience in a higher education and/or NHS R&D environment.
* Experience of developing and maintaining effective information management solutions including working with large and complex datasets.
* Substantial experience of partnership working across a range of roles and working with senior, key decision makers.
* Experience of managing large and complex programmes of research in a research environment.
* High level of literacy, able to write accurately, concisely and appropriately for a range of audiences.
* Analytical skills to manage project budgets, manage and control risk, draw conclusions and make recommendations to the project team.
* The ability to coordinate activity across complex, multi-partner projects.
* Excellent organisational and time management skills.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent IT skills, including competent use of Microsoft Office software.
* Knowledge of the National Institute for Health Research and its current priorities, specifically working knowledge of Biomedical Research Centres and their performance metrics.
* Knowledge of research environment in either NHS and/or HEI.
* A basic understanding of scientific and clinical terminology that underpins translational research.

Qualifications (essential)
* Qualified to Degree level and/or with significant relevant management and leadership experience, and proven success in developing and contributing to the development of strategy.
