We have flexible bank shifts and long-term placement opportunities available for HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
The lab provides a comprehensive 7-day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, parasitology, and molecular testing. You will rotate across these sections and be required to work shifts on a 24/7 rota system, which includes weekend and bank holiday working, as well as early/day/late/night shifts.
The successful applicant will initially be assigned to one of the Specialist areas of Biochemistry, which include Metabolic Chromatography, Trace Elements, LC-MS, and Endocrinology. You may be assigned to other parts of the Biochemistry laboratory as per service need.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
* To analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic purposes, and the clinical management of patients.
* To interpret clinical request forms and exercise judgement regarding work to be performed and priority relating to clinical urgency.
* To handle a range of body fluids, tissue samples, and other infectious material according to category II containment procedures.
* To handle chemicals according to COSHH regulations.
* To handle radioactive materials according to IRMA regulations.
* To deal with spillage of samples/chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner when necessary.
* To use laboratory equipment safely in accordance with local and manufacturers guidelines.
Must have Qualifications/Experience:
* IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology (from 2005) or working towards this qualification.
* Professional registration with HCPC.
* You must be able to plan and use your own time economically and effectively.
* Good communicator.
