Café Assistant Location: Rotherham Salary: £23,875 - £29,180 per annum FTE, depending on experience The Hospice is a charity dedicated to the people of Rotherham, offering specialist palliative and end of life care to their community since 1996. As a Café Assistant, you play a key role in creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment, ensuring every visitor experiences kindness and excellent service. There will be positions available throughout all 3 Café locations; Swinton, Parkgate and Broom Road. Varying hours are available, including weekend only. Key Responsibilities Food & Drink Service Prepare and serve food and beverages, ensuring high-quality presentation. Operate the till, handle cash and card payments, and maintain accurate records. Follow all food safety and hygiene protocols. Assist in setting up and closing down the café, ensuring cleanliness and readiness. Customer Service & Engagement Provide friendly, welcoming, and efficient service to all customers. Be knowledgeable about menu items and assist customers with any dietary requirements or allergens. Support hospice fundraising efforts by engaging with customers about initiatives where appropriate. Food Safety & Hygiene Adhere to Level 2 Food Safety in Catering requirements. Follow HACCP procedures and maintain food temperature logs. Assist in allergen management by following supervisor-led allergen procedures and communicating dietary information to customers. Assist in stock rotation and monitor use-by dates. Ensure all areas of the café meet hygiene and cleanliness standards. Teamwork & Support Work closely with the Café Supervisor to ensure smooth daily operations. Support volunteers and new team members with guidance and encouragement. Assist in training and supporting volunteers in daily café operations. Assist with stock management and reporting any shortages. Skills and Qualifications Previous experience in a café, hospitality, or customer service environment. Level 2 Food Safety in Catering (or willingness to obtain before starting). Friendly, approachable, and able to work well with the public. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards. Basic numeracy skills for cash handling and stock monitoring.
