We are looking to recruit a Medical Examiner Officer to support and develop the Medical Examiner Service, which is based at the Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton site.
You will have highly developed communication and organisational skills which will have been obtained by working in bereavement, clinical or similar role which will predominately support the Medical Examiner in the scrutiny of deaths which occur in the hospital and community. An excellent understanding of medical terminology and the death certification process is essential.
Main duties of the job
You will be providing a professional, sensitive and compassionate service, dealing with bereaved relatives and aggrieved callers and be exposed to distressing and emotive situations. The role will require working closely with clinical and non-clinical staff, the Medical Examiners, Bereavement Office, and the Coroner's Office. The role is primarily based at Queen's Hospital Burton, but you will be expected to work flexibly between sites as the service requires. You will also be expected to work weekends and Bank Holidays on a rota basis.
Advanced IT and literacy skills and experience of using a range of IT applications will be required. Applicants will be required to have completed the Medical Examiner Officer Core e-Learning modules prior to appointment.

Qualifications
* Educated to degree level/equivalent working knowledge at an advanced level.
* Completed e-LfH MEO training.
* A commitment to the concept of lifelong learning and undertaking personal development opportunities.

Knowledge & Experience
* Experience of working with bereaved families in sensitive and emotional situations.
* Knowledge of Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (where it relates to Death Certification).
* Detailed knowledge of clinical terminology.
* Experience working in a healthcare or related setting with multi-disciplinary teams and of working across organisational boundaries.
* Knowledge of the special requirements of the various faith groups with an awareness of equality and diversity issues surrounding death certification & arrangements.
* Working knowledge & experience of the Department of Health's Death Certification Reforms Medical Examiner system.
Skills
* Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to communicate in difficult and emotional situations with empathy and understanding.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels including senior clinicians/coroners etc about sensitive issues.
