Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) owns vessels and harbour infrastructure necessary for vital ferry services serving many communities throughout Scotland. We have big ambitions to transform the ferry network in Scotland. Backed by a five year £580 million investment plan from Scottish Government, our plans to upgrade and improve ferries and harbours are already well underway.
Due to an internal promotion and the ongoing development of our asset management and engineering capabilities, we are recruiting for the position of Harbour Engineer to strengthen the Harbour Assets and Planning Team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting the provision of safe and operable ferry harbour facilities to the island communities on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. Providing engineering expertise and support with maintenance and investment planning relating to CMAL’s harbours across Scotland.
The role
This role will manage the scoping and planning stages of civil engineering projects associated with CMAL’s port infrastructure estate, including liaising with steering groups and other projects within CMAL and externally. You will lead on various network wide asset projects, surveys and studies up to the point where works deliverables are defined, feeding into the project priority listing. You will also be key in maintaining the CMAL port infrastructure project priority list to ensure CMAL meets its strategic objectives. Duties include:
* Manage and lead on the feasibility, scoping and planning stages of projects and commissions on a day to day basis and oversee consultants and contractors.
* Manage the harbour works request process, including undertaking reviews and preparation of works delivery brief and scope as necessary.
* Lead networkwide asset studies and development projects, with a view to informing our internal policies and processes.
* Manage the CMAL network project priority listing process to ensure that all known issues are recorded and prioritised using the set criteria.
* Manage the CMAL damage process to ensure that damage to port infrastructure is repaired and costs are recovered in line with insurance arrangements.
Who are we looking for?
CMAL requires a motivated, professional, and diligent individual with a proactive and creative approach and the ability to work autonomously and flexibly. We are particularly looking for people with the following skills, experience, and attributes:
* Civil engineering/construction qualification at degree (BSc/BEng/MEng) level or equivalent
* Experience in managing and supervising civil/buildings works and contractors.
* Knowledge of public procurement, as well as project and budget management experience.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office & SharePoint, autoCAD experience and of working within a QA environment is desirable.
* A practical working knowledge of H&S legislation and client role under CDM is also essential.
* Good report writing and the ability to solve complex problems are essential.
* The job holder must be pro-active, with good communication and presentation skills.
* A valid UK driving licence is also required to carry out duties and ability to travel and work away from home as required.

The work environment
Our head office is on the Clyde Estuary in Port Glasgow and our port infrastructure is spread across the west coast and the islands of Scotland. Like most organisations, we’ve learnt a thing or two about flexible, remote working and we are actively building on this to ensure we have the best people working with us to serve the communities that rely on our infrastructure.
The primary responsibilities of the role will be undertaken during office hours of Monday to Friday, between 08.30 – 17.00 at our Port Glasgow head office, but the ability to work flexible hours, travelling and staying overnight on the CMAL network and elsewhere is also required.
