You will join the £10 million Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health which sits in the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences (DPMCN). Cardiff University’s thriving research culture has a strong focus on mental health with active research across a range of disciplines. The Wolfson Centre offers unique opportunities for the postholder to capitalise on nation-wide research resources; it hosts the all-Wales Schools Health Research Network (Social Sciences, Cardiff University) that collects comprehensive data on pupils across every secondary school in Wales and SAIL (Swansea University) which hosts primary and secondary care health, education and social care data on the whole population of Wales and which Centre studies are linked to. The post holder will also benefit from Centre research collaborations with leading international and national scientists. Our research covers population mental health, genetics, interventions, mental health informatics and schools-based mental health research. A unique feature of the Centre is that it provides mechanisms for rapid translation of research findings into policy and practice and evaluating the impacts of policy change via a government-university joint funded link post. The post-holder will carry out world-class research relevant to young people’s mental health and develop and lead a programme of research aligned to the aims of the Wolfson Centre and the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences (DPMCN) (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section). You will have a proven ability or strong potential to lead and develop internationally excellent research activity. You should be able to demonstrate an effective collaborative work ethos and the ability to attract independent, peer-reviewed research grant funding in open competition. Salary: £60,321 – £65,814 per annum (Senior Lecturer - Grade 8), £71,134 - £72,539 per annum (Reader - Grade 9). Main Function To lead and develop internationally excellent research activity in an area of research affiliated to the aims of the Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health and Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences (DPMCN). To direct and grow this research activity. To deliver and contribute to the delivery of high-quality, research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same. Teaching Teaching expectations are detailed below, however, we anticipate a phased approach to these activities with an initial focus on research. Opportunities include, MSc teaching and project supervision on topics in child and adolescent psychology and mental health, ad hoc lectures to undergraduate medical and psychology students and supervision of Student Selected Components and research projects on child and adolescent psychiatry (and associated examinations) that introduce medical students early to child and adolescent psychiatry. There is also the opportunity to get involved in hosting trainee clinical psychologists from the South Wales Doctoral training programme in Clinical Psychology. Develop relevant teaching material and contribute to the pedagogy of subject area as needed (child and adolescent psychology) Act as tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as relevant within the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences ensuring delivery of teaching in line with current curricular requirements, developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding, and enthusiasm amongst students (for example, contributing to the intercalated BSc in Psychology for medical students). Undertake relevant work associated with examinations, such as setting and marking assessments and providing student feedback (e.g. intercalated BSc, child and adolescent mental health-related teaching). Act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to medical students, including supervising the work of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the co-supervision of post-graduate research students, and acting as a post-graduate research progress review panel member as required. Leadership To lead a programme of research and take a proactive, collaborative approach in developing links between the Centre’s (and Division's) research and practical application of research findings.
