This is a rare opportunity for an enthusiastic, innovative and highly-motivated senior nurse to join the RUH as Matron for Oncology and Haematology.
As matron, you will provide managerial, professional and clinical leadership to nurses and support staff working within Haematology and Oncology Services (Inpatient, Day Unit and Clinical Nurse Specialists).
You will be based in the new Dyson Cancer Centre in Bath, which opened in April 2024. The purpose-built facility houses oncology, chemotherapy and anti-cancer treatments and radiotherapy services, a 22-bed inpatient ward with a mix of single rooms and four bed bays, a dedicated pharmacy and our research team and nuclear medicine and physics teams.
In this role, you will be accountable for coordinating safe, high-quality care to improve patient, carers, families and colleagues experience.
You'll work within your specialty clinical triumvirates and take a professional lead role in advising and supporting the corporate nursing agenda. There will be strong collaboration with the Matron for Specialist Services, Outpatients and CNS Lead and our Trust Lead Cancer Nurse to help progressively shape patient pathways and experience.
Main duties of the job
You will provide leadership and direction to the staff within these areas to ensure delivery of safe, high-quality care and governance in line with the organisation’s strategic vision.
We are looking for an individual who can inspire and motivate teams to reach their full potential with effective line management delivering financial balance and achievement of efficiencies.
You'll provide clinical leadership to frontline staff, actively promoting Compassion in Practice, the just and restorative culture, and the Trust's Values and Behaviours.
As part of the senior nursing body, operationally you will maintain visibility within the organisation and promote patient flow, manage staffing escalations, and work as part of the Matron on-call rota in collaboration with all divisions.
Strategically you will contribute to the corporate nursing agenda by leading specific projects as requested. You will be a role model as an accessible, approachable figure for staff, patients, families and carers.

Clinical
* To act as a role model for nurses within own defined clinical area/specialty and in the Division, promoting and demonstrating the standards of care expected. To challenge, influence and work with nursing teams and shared governance to continuously improve standards
* To lead and facilitate quality improvement projects and patient safety initiatives within own defined speciality areas to improve the experience of the patients, families and/or carers and improve patient outcomes
Leadership
* To lead and motivate staff effectively in the provision of care and future service
* To lead and support Divisional nursing staff through the process of change, supporting the continuous development of change management skills
Management
* To manage the day to day operational issues within own defined clinical area/specialty
* To lead within own sphere of responsibility and assist in the implementation of the Trust Escalation policy
* To play a key role in ensuring effective patient pathways and discharge planning contribute to the continued achievement of national targets
Person specification Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Registered Nurse with NMC Registration
* MSc in health related field or evidence of working at this level
* Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
* A management and/or leadership qualification (or equivalent) with equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
* Project management experience
* Demonstrated knowledge/qualification of SACT delivery
Knowledge Essential criteria
* Experience in the field of Oncology or Haematology
* Experience leading complex change within an organisation and improving services to increase quality and effectiveness
* Demonstrable experience of effective budgetary management and delivering on cost saving initiatives
Desirable criteria
* Evidence of involvement in service users' advocacy and complaints resolution
* Experience of managing a range of departments within the same role so that post-holder is able to manage effectively when not always based in the departments managed
* Previous experience of working at Matron level or equivalent
