The English Department is a large department in the College, currently employing five teachers. The Department enjoys a modern suite of classrooms with smartboard projection facilities, and a workroom with computers available for staff use.
The courses offered by the Department consist of:
1. A level English Literature (Pearson)
2. A level English Language (AQA)
3. A level English Language and Literature (Pearson)
4. Creative Writing
Approximately 200 students are currently studying level 3 English courses and there are around 150 students taking GCSE. The Department has an excellent record of student achievement, and staff work closely together in the development of teaching materials and course planning. All classes are taught by a single teacher. Teachers for all courses work within supportive teams for the exchange of ideas, resources and teaching strategies.
The courses are well resourced and take place in dedicated teaching rooms. There is easy access to IT facilities for students, who are encouraged to develop all aspects of relevant IT skills within their course. Staff/student relations are informal, positive and marked by high expectations of all students.
The Department also offers a range of enrichment opportunities for students, including creative writing and support for Oxbridge applications. There are regular theatre visits and guest speakers, and students are encouraged to participate in national competitions for playwriting and poetry.

Personal Tutor Responsibilities

The Personal Tutor plays a vital role in motivating, monitoring, supporting and guiding students’ academic progress through the College through regular one-to-one consultations. It is the responsibility of the tutor in the first instance to act upon this information as appropriate. This may mean, for example, offering advice, liaising with other subject staff or organizing additional subject support.
Some students will experience personal difficulties during their time at College, and these may well be brought to the Personal Tutor, especially if academic progress is being hindered.
It is the responsibility of the Personal Tutor to ensure tutees are aware of College policies and procedures.
