Temporary Works Principal Design Engineer
Leeds
Salary up to 70k plus Car/Allowance
Established over 40 years ago, my client has evolved into the largest and leading subcontractor for tunnelling in the United Kingdom and has expanded their operations internationally, particularly in the Middle East. Their construction capabilities range from traditional hand tunnelling techniques to innovative methods employed in large-scale projects like Crossrail and Thames Tideway. In addition to underground construction, they have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality above-ground structures for residential developments, specialising in low to high-rise concrete frames.
Due to an increase in workload, they are looking to add a Principal Design Engineer to their busy Leeds office.
As a Principal Engineer, you will:
1. Lead, manage, develop, and mentor the team of Engineers and Technicians.
2. Manage the deliverables of the team to tight programme deadlines and appropriate standards.
3. Ensure designs are produced to industry standards and codes, checked and approved in line with company quality procedures.
4. Apply ingenuity to produce designs beyond standard codes of practice.
5. Apply Temporary Works design principles in accordance with relevant standards.
6. Produce design solutions in timber, steel, reinforced concrete, and proprietary structural systems.
7. Be experienced in shaft design and understand tunnel designs.
8. Liaise with clients and project construction teams to understand requirements.
9. Coordinate external consultants and third-party checkers.
10. Produce reports and communications for clients, including items for statutory authorities' design approvals.
11. Lead NR and HE design approval processes.
12. Contribute to business development activity and aid tender bids when required.
You will possess a minimum of 10 years' experience in designing underground structures and tunnelling Temporary Works, with experience in a UK design consultancy environment. Strong team leadership capabilities, supporting, mentoring, and developing junior engineers are essential. You will have a proven high level of technical skill and competence in structural design and a sound geotechnical grounding. Experience of undertaking the Network Rail CRE role and a sound understanding of CDM Health & Safety legislation is beneficial.
An MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering is preferable, with Geotechnical and Mining degree backgrounds also considered. Chartered status or working towards it with a recognised institution, such as the ICE, is required. A full UK driving licence is necessary.
