Purpose of the role:
Filling the gaps and crossing the boundaries by applying a broad range of engineering knowledge and experience in taking the collection of parts and making it into the whole product for improving the Health and Performance of the Electrical Grid.
As Senior Product Design Engineer you would be spending most of your time:
1. Working in and contributing to an Agile team that uses methodologies such as Kanban and Scrum.
2. Leading collaboration on the definition of use cases and user stories for products or parts of products.
3. Delivery of hardware and software designed to requirements and satisfying selected software use cases.
4. Breaking deliverable requests into smaller, valuable deliverables. Working iteratively and incrementally to deliver value early and incorporate feedback and learnings.
5. Software and prototype hardware manufacture – testing and verification including Type Testing to recognised standards.
6. Development of embedded software for embedded micro-controllers.
7. Development of mixed low-frequency analogue and digital circuits for AC voltage measurement, current loop and various serial busses, including schematic capture, PCB layout and prototype testing.
8. Design and manufacture of test equipment.
9. Mechanical design of test jigs and product prototypes using e.g. Fusion360.
10. Supporting the technology development team to achieve deadlines and targets.
11. Taking a proactive, overall solutions driven approach to work, to develop solutions to problems, supporting and flexing with other functions as required to deliver WOW!
12. Leading by example; demonstrating and promoting the company values.
Minimum Requirements:
1. A degree in Product Design, Embedded Systems Design, Electrical or Electronic or Software Engineering or equivalent experience.
2. Able to read, understand and communicate through conversation, technical specifications and drawings.
3. Experience of, or willingness and able to work within a team that uses Agile methodologies.
4. Experience of, or willingness and able to work using TDD, BDD, SOLID design principles and CI/CD.
5. Taking a technical leadership role (formal or informal) for the development of a product as part of a larger team.
6. Solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience of analogue electronic design.
7. Solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience of writing and running code on embedded microcontrollers such as PIC16, DSPIC, ARM based SOM in C/C++ or other languages.
8. Basic understanding of designing products that comply with various national/international safety, EMC and other standards.
9. Willingness to help other engineers develop and become more capable.
10. Ability to work closely with others to deliver frequently and consistently, thereby providing a stable basis for delivery forecasts.
11. Experience of writing real-time embedded software in C.
12. Experience of code development and test using modern IDEs and command line (gcc).
Desirable Requirements:
1. Basic knowledge of Power Systems Engineering.
2. Has been responsible for taking a product through its entire life cycle.
3. Skilled in writing applications that run under real-time operating systems.
4. Experience of using Commercial PCB design software such as Altium; simulating and prototyping to ensure the design works first time.
5. Experience of designing circuits that measure voltages, currents, phase angles and harmonics.
6. Common control hardware and protocols such as USB, CAN, RS232, RS485, SPI and SCADA protocols such as MODBUS, DNP3, IEC60870 and IEC61850.
7. Skilled in using rapid prototyping techniques to deliver the maximum benefit with the minimum effort.
