Role Summary
Clinical Scientist (Microbiology, Agenda for Change Band 7) Full time (part time will be considered)
We are delighted to recruit a Clinical Scientist to work within the Clinical Microbiology department (Exeter site) of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDUH).
You must be a HCPC registered STP Scientist (or Biomedical Scientist nearing completion of STP within the current academic year).
About the Role
The Department of Microbiology provides a comprehensive Microbiology service to the RDUH Trust and local population across Northern and Eastern Devon. The department employs approximately 80 staff across two laboratories based at North Devon District Hospital and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, processing in excess of 600,000 specimens per annum. The service operates 24/7, including weekends, with overnight cover provided by an on-call service.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist with lab and project management skills and a high degree of self-motivation to join the team. This role is for those who have completed the STP or are due to complete within this academic year (please note: the latter will have pay annexed until completion of STP and MSc).
This is a hybrid role which includes both playing an active role within the clinical diagnostics (Biomedical Scientist) team, as well as scientific research and development (R&D). For the diagnostics element, you will be required to obtain and maintain competencies in a number of core Microbiology benches to process and interpret Microbiology diagnostic samples and validate results within your scope of practice. The R&D aspects of the role will be guided by the senior management team and will evolve over time.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
1. Review of the suitability of test repertoire
2. Validation of new methodologies and technologies
3. Repatriate referred tests
4. Undertake projects to review/improve the clinical efficacy, efficiency, or cost-benefits of diagnostic testing
5. Lead or assist in the introduction of new tests (including training, risk assessments, development of SOPs, and where relevant, published literature)
6. Liaising and relationship management with key stakeholders, including laboratory staff, managers, consultants, universities, specialist laboratories, research centres, and private customers
Working as an integral part of the laboratory team, you will help to deliver a high level of service quality to all service users. We are seeking a candidate who is highly motivated, driven, and a self-starter with a passion for R&D and evidence-based decision-making. Strong communication and organisational skills, along with an acute attention to detail, are needed. You will also rotate throughout the Microbiology department and require the ability to work under pressure and work well within a team.
The department has achieved UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 and is an IBMS approved training laboratory.
Working Pattern
Current laboratory opening hours are 8 am to 6 pm. Core hours are from 09:00 to 17:30 Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week but would consider part-time candidates). This post may also require participation in the Microbiology weekend and on-call service and any in-house shift system if service requires.
Interview Date:
Tuesday 21st January 2025
