Job summary
We are looking for a motivated and proactive individual to join the General Surgery secretarial team at York Teaching Hospital. This role will be cross-site working, 4 days at Scarborough and 1 day at York Hospital.
This post is perfect for applicants with a background in administration looking to step up into a senior secretarial role, within a fast-paced, cutting-edge clinical service. The role is varied and involves taking a lead in providing comprehensive secretarial/PA support to our consultants in General Surgery and their teams. The role of medical secretary also requires excellent communication, engaging with our patients and assisting with their queries and concerns, liaising with the wider clinical networks and Multidisciplinary Teams.
Applicants need to be proficient at typing and have a working experience of digital dictation, with recent secretarial/administrative experience. Knowledge of medical vocabulary is an advantage, although not essential.
Main duties of the job
The main duties will include:
1. Typing of clinic and discharge letters
2. Consultant diary management
3. Maintaining patient information and clinical systems
4. Dealing with correspondence from patients and GP's
5. Ensuring referral to treatment and cancer tracking targets are met
6. Typing of multi-disciplinary team meeting notes

Qualifications
Essential
19. GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
20. Word processing skills - OCR III (or equivalent RSA III )
21. Typing skills - OCR III (or equivalent RSA III)
Experience

22. Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
23. Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
24. Ability to manage and prioritise conflicting deadlines and pressures
25. Ability to cope with distressing and emotional situations with patients, relatives and staff
