Background
We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Practice within our growing and highly regarded School of Pharmacy.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who can contribute to the well-established educational excellence of the Department, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. A particular focus would be on supporting our established MPharm, in the delivery of integrated pharmacy practice within our new curriculum.
The Department of Pharmacy is situated within the College of Medicine and Health facilitating close interdisciplinary working involving collaboration with science-based and clinical colleagues in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Nursing and Midwifery, and Physiotherapy. You will be working with highly experienced academics who can support your career development.
The post holder will have a focus in Pharmacy practice with a desire to further their teaching experience. This could involve a wide range of subjects relevant to the practice of pharmacy and clinical areas in pharmacy.
The post may also involve participation in the design, development, delivery, and leadership of a range of programmes of study with a focus on the principles of Clinical Pharmacy relevant to undergraduate pharmacy, postgraduate education, or CPD delivery.
Role Summary
The post will involve contribution to the design, development and delivery of undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes, with activity centred upon the University of Birmingham’s MPharm. The position will involve co-ordination with team colleagues and action within the team to participate in teaching (including development of materials), and scholarship with an emphasis on clinical pharmacy practice. This will include multi-disciplinary working.
In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to:
* the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels;
* enhancement of the student experience and employability.
The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including:
* providing expert advice to staff and students, and
* developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
You will be expected to advance teaching and learning practice in your modules within the school, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support. You will deliver excellent teaching that inspires students, and is informed by current clinical practice and research. The post-holder will promote a patient focused and professional approach to teaching and learning activities in Pharmacy.
Management and administration is likely to include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.
Main Duties
Education
* Contribute and deliver across the range of teaching and learning activities, with specific reference to the MPharm Programme;
* Contribute to leading curriculum development and/or renewal, including design (either independently or as part of the teaching team) innovative and evidence-based teaching material to undergraduate and postgraduate students including a range of professional subject areas as appropriate e.g. law and ethics of medicines use.
* Develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are best practice in clinical education;
* Transfer knowledge to students (and where appropriate other team members) including clinical skills and processes within a range of educational environments such as lectures, practical sessions, workshops, small group teaching sessions and one-to-one interactions;
* Participate in the design and operation of appropriate assessments associated with teaching activities in a timely manner with provision of appropriate student feedback;
* Advise others on aspects of learning, teaching and assessment;
* Advance the practice of teaching in their modules and within the school, and play an important role in student academic support;
* Inform your teaching practice by discipline based research;
* Frequently update your subject expertise, and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes;
* You may play an important role in the recruitment and admission of students; and co-supervise doctoral students to completion;
* Act as personal tutor to students through stipulated student contact and provision of individual support including professional and careers related advice;
* Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including (as appropriate):
* Teaching and examining courses at a range of levels;
* Plan and review your own teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same;
* Design contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content;
* Use digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment;
* Developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely;
* Carry out the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining;
* Developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods;
* Developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach;
* Devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.
Management/Administration
To contribute to Departmental /School administration. This may include:
* contributing to the administration/management of teaching across the School of Pharmacy;
* To develop and maintain collaborative links with external contacts, including other educational bodies, professional employers and professional bodies;
* To assist where necessary in the processes to gain and maintain professional accreditation for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with relevant professional bodies;
* where appropriate, leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
* advising on personal development of colleagues and students;
* making a contribution to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
* managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities;
* developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach;
* promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour;
* To maintain registration with a relevant professional body where necessary;
* Participate actively in subject group meetings;
* Undertake academic course-related administrative tasks, including attendance at Examination Boards, as appropriate.

Person Specification
* Attained a postgraduate qualification in a relevant professional / clinical pharmacy discipline.
* Current registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* Extensive professional relevant experience.
* Evidence of training, specialist skills and abilities as an experienced pharmacist.
Teaching
* Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
* Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.
Management Administration
* Ability to contribute to School management processes.
* Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
* Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
* Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
* Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action.
