National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Net Zero Technical Team Lead to join our Environmental Sustainability Division within Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). The Net Zero Technical Team Lead will, working across the company, develop and implement decarbonisation policies, standards, and best practices. They will provide specialist technical advice and guidance, acting as the focal point to ensure alignment between development, renewal and maintenance of National Highways assets and the Environmental and Sustainability Strategies.
Please note this is a hybrid position and can be based from any of our UK offices however travel to Birmingham to attend team meetings will be required.
Key Responsibilities:
* Act as a source of specialist subject matter expertise on carbon, particularly in the areas of construction and maintenance, innovation and decarbonisation pathways and lead technical assurance of carbon submissions and data, ensuring National Highways are establishing, implementing and delivering actions to achieve the construction and maintenance of performance metric.
* Ensure alignment between organisational strategies, including asset management, and programmes, including innovation, and the environmental sustainability strategy. Including their implementation programmes.
* Represent National Highways on net zero related technical and standards committees, steering groups, conferences, seminars and workshops. Contribute to the development of external standards, to ensure that National Highways views are appropriately represented.
* Lead on internal and external stakeholders' engagement to understand business needs, promoting and gaining commitment to Net Zero objectives and solutions, identifying key areas for improvement and sharing best practices. Key areas of engagement comprise of low carbon materials, innovation, asset resilience, carbon data and assurance.
* Management of technical consultancy and research suppliers, ensuring best value and alignment to corporate goals.
About you.
* A chartered engineer and/or environmental specialist with a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE, IEMA) or hold equivalent recognition of your technical suitability for the role.
* Experience of Project Delivery including delivering change through innovation or new opportunities.
* Leading and developing small teams to deliver required objectives.
* Excellent collaborator with ability to gain the involvement and engagement of a wide range of stakeholders.
* Experience and application of expertise in the following areas: (principles of decarbonisation and its inclusion within policy, procedures and standards / A broad appreciation of whole life cycle of carbon and sustainable highway assets; the materials, products and technologies used).

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
