About White Cube
White Cube was set up by Jay Jopling in 1993 as a project room for contemporary art. The gallery has since grown into one of the most influential commercial galleries in the world, representing internationally renowned artists such as Georg Baselitz, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Mona Hatoum, Anselm Kiefer, Liu Wei, Park Seo Bo, Doris Salcedo and Jeff Wall.
White Cube’s exhibition programme extends across locations in London, Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Seoul and online. Since its inception in 1993, the gallery has exhibited the work of many of the world’s most highly acclaimed contemporary artists.
The role:
White Cube is looking to recruit an Assistant Editor to work alongside the Senior Director, Editorial, and the Senior Editor, to support in the editorial department across all aspects of the gallery’s publishing programme and editorial output. The successful candidate will need to be highly organised, able to work across multiple projects simultaneously, have an eye for detail and accuracy, and have a passion for art writing and the editorial process.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Negotiate and monitor timelines for stages in editorial and publication production processes.
2. Upkeep of in-house style guides, publication records and gallery library.
3. Liaise with in-house teams to compile and organise research material relating to editorial projects.
4. Research and propose writers for text and essay commissions.
5. Copy-edit, fact-check and proofread short-form and long-form texts fit for release or publication.
6. Write copy for newsletters, offer documents and exhibition presentations.
7. Liaise with the in-house design team on the creation of art fair, artist overview and exhibition presentations.
8. Package content fit for sharing with external contributors, including writers and designers.
9. Upload text and images for third parties using a content management system.
10. Liaise with the photography team to coordinate and make ready image files.
11. Undertake image research and manage licensing agreements.
12. Liaise with printers to manage delivery arrangements, including generating import and export documents.
13. Oversee product photography for online shop.
14. Support the Bookshop Manager with internal and external distribution of in-house titles.
15. Support the Bookshop Manager in identifying placement and distribution opportunities for the imprint.
16. Support in the organisation and management of events relating to the launch of in-house titles, including evening work where necessary.
17. Manage internal communication and presentation to other departments about new and forthcoming titles.
18. Liaise with the Communications and Digital teams on promotional strategy for publications.
19. Write copy for newly released Publications and Editions for sharing on social media and digital platforms.
20. Process invoices from external suppliers, upkeep spend records for new publications and third-party publications, and support with regular financial reporting.
21. Oversee the design and production of bookshop collateral, gallery merchandise and stationery.
The ideal candidate:
1. 2+ years of experience working in a similar role or field.
2. Strong copy-editing and proofreading skills.
3. Ability to write copy following a house style and tone of voice.
4. Exceptional attention to detail.
5. Knowledge of image licensing and publishing rights.
6. Experience with publication production timelines.
7. Highly organised and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
8. A keen interest in working within the field of contemporary art.
