Overview FWAG SW are seeking someone with a passion for food, farming and the environment. With growing demand to provide advice to farmers on agroecological practices, we are looking for applicants who can bring their own specialisms and experience to enhance our team. This may be agricultural diffuse pollution, regenerative farming, delivering the public goods policy agenda or supporting future farm resilience. We are looking for a broad range of skills and experience with an ability to engage and facilitate with our farmers and landowners. FWAG SW works with a wide range of stakeholders and provides environmental advice to farmers on a variety of agricultural, ecological, sustainable land management and farm resilience matters. We are seeking applicants for the role of Farm Environment Adviser to join our Somerset team of 28 people which include farm advisers, community natural flood management advisers, facilitators and project managers. Our Farm Environment Advisers provide advice in a whole-farm context considering agri-environmental schemes, species and habitat management, diffuse pollution mitigation, soil and nutrient management, natural flood management (NFM), protection of archaeological features and landscape value, and compliance to legislation and regulation, all as part of a profitable farm business. There are opportunities to develop and manage your own projects and to become a technical specialist in specific areas. The post requires the delivery of high-quality environmental advice to farmers through 1:1 farm visits, reports, events and workshops, plus the preparation of articles for FWAG SW farmer members. As well as providing advice, the successful applicants will contribute to the delivery, management and outputs of existing and developing projects which will involve working across several stakeholders. You will be supported by other experienced Advisers, Project Officers and Team Leaders across the county. The Somerset team deliver several projects supporting water quality within Somerset’s rivers. Our main project is the Hills to Levels project providing a catchment approach, aiming to slow the flow, reduce flood risk and erosion, improve water quality and deliver wider environmental benefits and increased resilience on the floodplain. Within this project, we advise farmers, landowners and communities through 1:1 farm visits, community events, management plans, workshops, farm demonstrations and walks and newsletter articles. We initiate, design and oversee the implementation of NFM and land management measures, to hold and slow the flow of the water. We welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds within the sector, whether that is environment and wildlife, soils, nutrients, farm infrastructure, farm management, cropping, livestock, Integrated Pest Management or NFM. Somerset Farm Environment Adviser Key Responsibilities: Co-ordinate and undertake the delivery of independent, objective and professional sustainable land management advice to farmers, landowners and land managers. Prepare agri-environment and other grant applications on behalf of our clients. Develop farm walks, workshops and other events with our membership team. Maintain and facilitate existing partnerships with other organisations and develop new ones where they further FWAG SW’s objectives. Develop and manage the delivery and outputs of projects on time and within budget. Projects will include identifying and advising on land and habitat management; soil and nutrient management and the installation of NFM features to improve water quality and hold water. Oversight of sub-contractors, ensuring consistency, professionalism and quality of service. Apply your own technical specialisms in agricultural and environmental practices to support delivery of advice for clients and support your colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Support less experienced members of the team with their technical and professional development. Assist colleagues and undertake such other duties that FWAG SW require and attend appropriate training courses and seminars approved or organised by FWAG SW.
