We are seeking a dedicated Biomedical Science Assistants (Higher level) to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histopathology, based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield.
A Biomedical Science Assistant is an integral part of a pathology laboratory team. The role supports Biomedical Scientists in delivering a first-class diagnostic service to medical professionals. This role is both challenging and rewarding, centred around ensuring patients receive the very best level of care in the analysis of their samples and the results that are produced.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be required to undertake:
* Roles in specimen reception, specimen dissection transcription, specimen processing, computer data entry, slide scanning for Digital pathology, operation of laboratory equipment, filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides, and paraffin blocks.
* Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation, and processing.
* Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, and other Service Users, including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
* Preparation of slides to load and unload digital pathology scanners.
* Assist Scientific Staff in laboratory activities.
* Store and retrieve biological material.

Qualifications
* GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above (or equivalent experience/quals)
* Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus Significant laboratory experience or Extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline
Experience
* Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy
* Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
* NHS laboratory experience
Skills and Knowledge
* Keyboard and basic IT skills
* Awareness of Health & Safety issues
* Effective Communication skills, written and oral
* Evidence of effective time management skills and a methodical approach
