We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced person for the post of Senior Dental Officer.
You will be working to lead on the delivery of dental care to Special care patients including provision of treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia. You will provide clinical leadership in Special Care Dentistry including the development of relevant protocols and the training and mentoring of staff.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate clinical leadership. Candidates will have drive and enthusiasm for service development and improvement to include teaching, supervision and line management. They will independently provide dental care under sedation in the community setting, participate in the theatre lists at local hospitals for the provision of treatment under GA and they will have a commitment to provide domiciliary care.
You will be joining Dental Services during an exciting time as the Community Dental Services across Thames Valley are currently working closely together to move towards an Integrated Dental Care Service to provide improved patient care for vulnerable groups across the Thames Valley. The postholder will work in Buckinghamshire providing clinical care, peer support and supervision.
Candidates will be expected to hold Bachelor in Dental Surgery or equivalent, hold a relevant postgraduate qualification and have full GDC registration.
Applicants must have an NHS performer number and be on the appropriate Performers List.
The post holder will be involved in the provision of oral health care for priority groups that may include people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems, medically compromised, severe anxiety or phobias.
Services the post holder will provide include dental care under sedation and general anaesthesia, domiciliary care, provision of oral health care to those in secure settings, screening and epidemiology and oral health promotion.
The post holder will contribute to and provide leadership, management and training.
The post holder will support the Senior Leadership Team and undertake managerial roles. They will assume a leadership role in a clinical area and/or team as appropriate.
The postholder will work in Milton Keynes providing clinical care, peer support and supervision. In addition, there will be an opportunity for the postholder will also work closely with colleagues in the Oxfordshire and Berkshire Community Dental Service as part of the ongoing integration work.

Clinical Duties
• Plans and manages care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues in line with local commissioning
• Plans, develops and implements programmes to prevent disease and promote health in target groups within the population
• Undertakes thorough examination and assessment of patients to be able to provide appropriate care or to determine the need for more specialist advice
• Competent in the management of medical emergencies, able to lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques equipment and drugs
• Keep up to date with developments in this area and/or able to advise other members of and takes responsibility for organising the training and resources for the acute management of medical emergencies within the service
• Use appropriate patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment. This will include the use of sedation and general anaesthesia, depending upon qualifications and experience or following appropriate training.
• Undertake the diagnosis, selection of appropriate restorative technique and delivery of restoration or replacement of teeth in an effective way
• Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate periodontal techniques and delivery of periodontal care in an effective way
• Routine exodontia and simple surgical exodontias
• Provide clinical supervision
• May be required to organise dental epidemiology programmes and train examiners, May be involved in data analysis and report
• May be required to provide care in secure settings and Her Majesty’s Prisons
• Will be required to provide care in a range of other settings such as domiciliary care.
Professional Duties
• Communicates with a range of patients and families and user groups on complex clinical issues and/ or in difficult situations
• Communicates with the clinical team and peers in a range of clinical and/or leadership situations in a professional and appropriate manner, which inspires confidence, motivation and teamwork
• Communicates with other health and social care professionals on a range of issues relating to oral health and oral health care
• Demonstrates a professional clinical approach, including participation in appraisal, peer review, clinical audit and continuing professional development activities
• Has sufficient knowledge, confidence and experience to deal professionally with issues of poor or underperformance in colleagues and other members of the dental team
• Up to date knowledge and skills in clinical techniques and their application in accordance with the general dental Council’s requirement for lifelong learning.
• Attend mandatory training as required by MKCHS and BPDS
• Have a full registration with the General Dental Council
• Have undertaken vocational training or be able to demonstrate equivalence
• Have an NHS Performer number or be eligible to apply for one
• Take responsibility for personal development
• Have a commitment to high professional standards
• Be able to travel to work at other CNWL and Thames Valley sites, some of which are not easily served by public transport and therefore the post holder would be expected to make necessary travel arrangements to meet these needs
Leadership and Management Duties
• Responsible for day to day leadership and management of dental clinics including supervising staff, resolving local concerns and complaints, ensuring all relevant policies and procedures are adhered to.
• Maximises both individual and clinic activity and ensure the most effective use of resources through efficient management of time and appointment booking
• Has sufficient knowledge and experience of the legislative and financial frameworks to provide advice or support on such matters to other members of the dental team
• Provides professional and operational leadership to the dental team
• Provides leadership and training in specific areas to a range of staff
• Understands responsibility for health and safety issues and can advise others in the service on these issues
• Has an active role in clinical, organisational and strategic governance, this may include management of meetings, projects, rotas, incidents, complaints and audit
• Produces reports and information as required
• Attends various relevant meetings such as clinical governance or operational meetings
• Has an active role in ensuring safeguarding concerns are reported and followed up in the clinical team in line with protocol.
