Founder and CEO of Sanctions SOS, ICA Panel member, and Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London on Sanctions
In the 21st Century sanctions have become an increasingly complex and utilised foreign policy tool deployed in response to a wide array of issues and events. As a tool to elicit changes in behaviour, signal disapproval, or constrain certain activities, sanctions can have wide ranging impact. Often sanctions will affect not just those subject to sanctions, but also a wider range of stakeholders and may result in unintended consequences. Typically public, private and academic sectors must not only understand the impact of sanctions and complex legal instruments, but also ensure they are compliant with these sanctions, effectively implementing and enforcing them. The complexity is often further fuelled by differences in approach across various countries and multilateral organisations. Critical elements of this involve being able to identify and manage sanctions risks effectively, ensuring sufficient capacity and resources are applied, and that staff are appropriately trained.
