Winchester College has an exciting opportunity to appoint a Senior Gardener starting as soon as possible.
The Head Grounds Person is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Department and reports to the Estates Bursar, who is the Head of Department. This position reports to the Head Grounds Person and Head Gardener.
The Senior Gardener will work closely with the Head Gardener to ensure high standards of maintenance and to create and implement work programs within the College's formal gardens. Sound horticultural knowledge is essential for tasks performed independently.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are not exhaustive but outline the responsibilities expected:
* Maintain high presentation standards with attention to detail, using correct pruning, plant care, and maintenance techniques to ensure the gardens look their best throughout the year, accommodating daily college life and events.
* Apply practical gardening skills to care for various gardens, including formal quads, medieval gardens, and modern planting areas such as the Head Master’s and Wardens’ Gardens.
* Experience in pruning and caring for shrubs, roses, and perennials.
* Interest in garden design or willingness to learn for ongoing garden development, including planning, design, and planting.
* Propagate and source plants by developing contacts with nurseries and suppliers.
* Conduct garden tours and plan for Garden Open Days.
* Work independently in all weather conditions, with flexible hours to meet college needs.
* Good physical fitness and willingness to work at heights.
* Proven ability to operate garden machinery.
* Spraying qualifications (PA1 and PA6) are required.

Essential qualities and skills include:
* Honesty and reliability

* Good organizational skills
* Ability to work under pressure and independently
* Awareness of health and safety, with willingness to undergo training
* Ability to work as part of a team and individually
* Enjoyment of working in a school environment
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
* Full driving license
* Horticultural qualifications such as RHS Level 3 or equivalent are desirable but not essential.
Flexibility in work arrangements is expected to accommodate the dynamic roles within the college.
