Job Purpose The Ranger will report to the Wildlife and Education Ranger and work in collaboration with the Wildlife and Education Ranger and the Visitor Experience Team to deliver educational and commercial visitor experiences. The Ranger will engage and inspire the visitors and other stakeholders in the management of the site, increase their awareness and understanding of what it offers, why it is special, and how it is managed. They will assist with the day-to-day operation of the Estates heritage landscape. This will involve practical work, leading volunteer tasks, planning, species and habitat monitoring, liaising with visitors and the local community, and leading visitor engagement activities. Key Accountabilities Plan, co-ordinate and deliver public engagement activities relating to biodiversity including Beaver Safaris, Wildlife Cruises, Wildlife walks and educational visits.Act as the on-site expert on ecology and biodiversity initiatives, supported by the Head of Biodiversity, Estates Lead and in conjunction with Wildlife Management contractors and consultants.Plan, co-ordinate and carry out ecological maintenance works in line with the agreed management plans as part of the Estates Team.Support in delivering biodiversity and sustainability activities and projects.Support the development and maintenance of great relations with key external stakeholders to ensure continued progression of the Trentham Estate e.g. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, Beaver Trust.Carry out ecological survey and monitoring work.Report to the site management regularly, to assist with planning objectives, and delivering and amending work plans.Support corporate communication and marketing activities. Attend external meetings, give presentations and help with events as required.Ensure all administration processes are adhered to.Follow clear instructions relating to health and safety. Experience, Skills and Knowledge Required To hold a relevant degree, vocational or equivalent qualification or significant experience A sound knowledge of UK flora and fauna. Practical skills and experience in estate maintenance, nature reserves or similar green spaces. A sound background in countryside management machinery and equipment. An understanding and working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation. An ability to work alone or as a member of a team (i.e. to work with other team members, gardeners, students, volunteers commercial team members and contractors as may be required). Hold a current driving licence and be able to use own vehicle for work purposes on occasion. Who We’re Looking For You will be a confident and engaging communicator with a flexible approach to ensure that visitors can share your enthusiasm and knowledge. You will have a background in ecology and a passion for UK Biodiversity restoration. You will have prior experience in delivering wildlife tours or nature based educational sessions. We are open 364 days a year with visitor access from dawn till dusk. We will be looking for you to deliver events and walks like Dawn Chorus or Dusk Beaver Safaris giving an excellent visitor journey. Develop and lead on volunteer engagement activities for reintroduction & conservation programmes such as Water Voles, Beavers and bird and bat nesting. Key Responsibilities Reserve Management : Develop a small team of Wildlife Volunteers who will be gaining industry work experience or just relishing the opportunity to support rewilding in the UK through supporting you with your public engagement & conservation projects.You will do some ecological survey and monitoring work.Report to the site management plans regularly, assist with planning objectives, and delivering and amending work plans.Help recruit new members and supporters in the course of your day-to-day activities and assist those with direct recruitment responsibilities. Staff and Volunteers: Support the recruitment of volunteers to identified roles and assist with the management of volunteers, supporting all aspects of work, implementing the agreed management strategy, including management of conservation work parties. Partnership and Stakeholders: Working with our estates team and specialist ecologists, contractors and environmental charities in developing and delivering conservation projects on site. Communication and Promotion: Support corporate communication and marketing activities. Attend external meetings, give presentations and help with events as required.Support the Senior Leadership Team in the production of articles and reports of Trentham’s work for publications such as internal and external newsletters, reports, and with other communications activities including website and social media.Your work will see you conducting tours on land and water including on our electric catamaran cruise boat, motorised and non-powered watercraft to monitor wildlife activity and support conservation work. Health and Safety : Ensure that reserves are maintained and managed in accordance with H&S policies so that it does not pose undue hazards to staff, the public, contractors or our ecosystem. Attend sites to deal with emergency situations and co-ordinate the relevant responses. Ensure all work by staff, volunteers and contractors is carried out in a safe manner, and in accordance with Health & Safety policies and legislation. Produce risk assessments and any additional H&S requirements as required. Other Duties Undertake training as the need arises.Go about duties in a resource-efficient way and minimise impacts to the environment. About Trentham Estate The 5th most visited paid for Visitor Attraction in 2021, Trentham is located between the M6 motorway and Stoke-on-Trent conurbation. A 725-acre estate with a mosaic of restored habitats including Heathland, Wood Pasture, Wet Woodland, Wetland, Meadows and SSSI Woodland. The Estate has been working with Natural England on Higher Level Stewardship, Derek Gow Consultancy and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust on a range of rewilding and reintroduction projects with the introduction of Eurasian Beavers in 2023 we have the UK largest enclosure which is accessible to the public and is home to a breeding pair of beaver, with a family group of 8 animals currently. The Beavers are within a 180-acre enclosure encompassing the whole of the garden which attracts over 800,000 visitors per annum.
