The Mental Health Rapid Response Service (MHRRS) is a small dedicated team of nurses, a social worker, support workers, and a team secretary providing support to individuals in Brighton and Hove facing urgent mental health risks. Referrals can be made by anyone concerned about a person's immediate mental well-being, including the individuals themselves, their carers, GPs, healthcare professionals, police, paramedics, housing and supported accommodation workers, and social services.
Key aspects of MHRRS include a rapid urgent response service, offering assessments within four hours for approved new referrals, as well as an enhanced duty role within the Assessment and Treatment Service for those requiring urgent mental health evaluations. A significant part of the team's role involves handling crisis calls, requiring excellent de-escalation skills, thorough risk assessments, and the ability to develop practical safety plans to help individuals maintain their well-being.

Main duties of the job
We are seeking an experienced and qualified professional (mental health nurse, occupational therapist, or social worker) with strong assessment and communication skills to support individuals and their families during mental health crises in the community. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, person-centered, and committed to delivering high-quality care to patients, carers, and others who engage with the service.
The successful applicant must have excellent documentation skills, the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and the capability to coordinate onward referrals following assessments.
Previous experience in diverse mental health settings is essential, along with a strong background in risk assessment.
About us
This role follows a seven-day working pattern with early and late shifts. Staff are currently based at Mill View Hospital and are required to conduct home visits, making the ability to travel efficiently within the geographical area essential.
As part of the team, you will receive regular clinical and managerial supervision and access to ongoing training and development opportunities.
MHRRS sits alongside the community services but is a key component of the urgent care crisis pathway, working alongside the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team, The Haven, and the Mental Health Liaison Team.
Brighton and Hove is a unique, vibrant, and dynamic place to live and work, offering a lively city atmosphere with easy access to the South Downs National Park for a peaceful escape.
Job responsibilities
As a Band 6 practitioner within MHRRS, your role is to support individuals reaching out to the service with concerns about their own or someone else's mental health when there is risk present. You will need strong assessment skills to quickly understand the situation, identify risks, and develop an appropriate plan of action.
You will also provide guidance to Band 4 Support, Time, and Recovery (STR) workers, who will consult with you on all calls they handle. It is essential to stay informed about decisions made within the team to ensure the best possible outcomes for individuals and their support networks.
When clinically indicated, you will be responsible for arranging a comprehensive mental health assessment for at-risk individuals. This includes collaboratively developing a plan to help them stay safe and access appropriate treatment, followed by liaising with relevant services to ensure effective support.
