Consultant in Pre-hospital Emergency Critical Care (HEMS)
We are pleased to invite applications for this exciting role to complement and expand the existing consultant cohort within the charity. We aim to increase the provision of senior clinical leadership and supervision of the medical teams in accordance with local and national training standards.
This is a 12-month fixed term on an annually renewable basis.
The proposed job plan is 3 PAs equivalent (annualised) working across both airbases and across three shift patterns - early, day and night, equivalent to approximately 30 clinical shifts per year plus 10 non-clinical days.
Main duties of the job
Successful applicants will deliver dynamic consultant level, service-wide leadership, training, service development and governance alongside excellent pre-hospital medical and trauma care.
Job responsibilities
* Deliver excellent pre-hospital critical care to unwell and injured patients of all ages, alongside ambulance and allied emergency service partners and local healthcare stakeholders.
* Provide high-quality supervision, training, assessment, mentorship and support to all non-consultant doctors and paramedics within the service.
* Provide consultant presence, leadership and participation in the clinical governance activities of the service including, but not limited to, clinical governance meetings, team inset days and the Consultant of the Week (CoW) rota and responsibilities. As the service evolves, an on-call function may be incorporated (with appropriate job planning).
* Participate in regular case-review meetings.
* Participate in continuing professional development in pre-hospital medicine and related topics to demonstrate currency and commitment to the specialty and ensure that EHAAT clinicians are nationally and internationally recognised as experts in pre-hospital emergency critical care.
* Participate in a service-specific annual appraisal as part of wider appraisal processes maintaining registration and revalidation with the General Medical Council.
* Act in accordance with relevant national standards, local and regional protocols and provide medical care consistent with the guidelines of Good Medical Practice as defined by the General Medical Council.
* Support and contribute to the audit and research activity of the organisation.
* Lead and contribute to a portfolio of clinical and non-clinical administration and service development which would be annually reviewed and agreed as part of the service-specific appraisal and personal development plan.
* Demonstrate and be an ambassador for the EHAAT values.
* Contribute to the charitable activities of the organisation including, but not limited to, income generation/media/PR/marketing activity.
* Collaborate with and support the EHAAT Centre for Excellence (C4X) workstreams and educational activities, working alongside the multidisciplinary team to innovate, educate and research.
* Actively monitor and protect the reputation of the organisation as a safe and effective health care provider and contribute to processes that support and ensure our Outstanding status with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Experience
* Demonstrate in-depth and advanced specialist knowledge of the clinical and operational practice of Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Care.
* Demonstrate expertise, competence and experience in contemporary resuscitation techniques and pre-hospital critical care management relating to acute traumatic and medical illness in adult and paediatric populations at a level consistent with expert practice.
* Demonstrate the principles of team resource management as pertaining to pre-hospital medical practice and patient safety.
* Major Incident Knowledge and awareness, including the recommendations from Inquiries and inquests.
* Evidence of the use of ultrasound in current practice.
* Working fluency with the vocabulary of Human Factors as related to patient safety.
* Minimum of 2 years experience in pre-hospital emergency medical care (HEMS), to include a minimum of 1 year whole time.
* Ultrasound qualification(s).
* Experience of endovascular and extracorporeal resuscitation techniques.
* Attendance at Human Factors educational event(s) and courses.
* Experience of working in more than one pre-hospital / HEMS service.
* Demonstrable experience of the training and supervision of doctors within a pre-hospital service/setting.
* Experience of Educational Supervision in pre-hospital medicine/base specialty.
* Experience of working within a retrieval service.
* Hold a substantive consultant appointment in base specialty and the ability to successfully accommodate the demands of two consultant positions.
* Demonstrate recent commitment to meaningful quality improvement project(s).
* Experience of and commitment to clinical audit.
* Experience in leadership and delivery of service development projects.
* Experience in service development/quality improvement within a pre-hospital medical service.
* Significant contribution to pre-hospital research project(s).
* Significant experience in clinical risk management/Patient Safety role.
Registration
* Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
* Inclusion on GMC specialist register (or be within 3-months of specialist registration) in relevant speciality (e.g. anaesthesia, emergency medicine, intensive care medicine, surgery).
* GMC recognised trainer.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent
* Higher degree (PhD, MD) BSc in relevant field
* BSc/MSc, in Pre-hospital Medicine, Resuscitation Medicine, Trauma science, or similar related field
* FIMC, DipIMC, DipRTM or equivalent
* Higher diploma/degree in Medical Education/Medical Simulation/Healthcare Management & Leadership or similar
