Admin Support Emergency Medical Receiving Unit/EMRU Support
About this role:
At Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, we have a simple mission – Personal and Compassionate Care Every Time. Volunteers help to enhance the patient experience and complement the work of paid members of staff.
EMRU is a 17 bedded and 8 chaired assessment/inpatient unit for medical patients, newly opened in November 2024. They cover most medical conditions and see patients straight from SDEC, UTC, and A&E, or see patients instead of them going to A&E. It can be busy, and it can be very busy.
Commitment: A minimum of one 3-hour shift per week
What are the key tasks?
* Sign in at the beginning of every shift and report to the nurse in charge/sister to understand how the ward is functioning at any given time.
* Take medication charts to pharmacy.
* Welcome all patients, their relatives, and visitors into the Unit.
* Befriend patients and support their needs in non-clinical ways, e.g., encourage conversation, provide reassurance, be a listening ear.
* If authorized by clinical staff, provide tea/coffee or other refreshments to patients, relatives, or visitors.
* Photocopy patient information leaflets and general filing as required.
* Answer telephone calls, deal with general enquiries, and pass on messages to paid staff.
* Escort mobile patients around the hospital with the permission of nursing staff.
* Restock parts of the wards, e.g., gloves, linen cupboards.
* Help complete menu cards.
* Maintain the main entrance and reception area.
* Debrief at the end of the session with the duty manager.
Volunteers must not do:
* Lift or move patients.
* Perform any general cleaning.
* Distribute or give drugs to patients.
* Counsel patients or relatives (as distinct from befriending and listening).
* Bath, wash, or dress patients.
* Engage in clinical assessments of patients, i.e., blood pressure checks, taking temperatures.
* Handle bedpans, urine bottles, clinical waste, or come into contact with blood or any other body fluids, used sharps (needles), or yellow/orange refuse bags.
* Feed patients.

Essential requirement/commitment:
* Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
* All Volunteers will require a DBS check.
* Participation in the training relevant to your role and confidential discussion of any reasonable adjustments required to meet your needs.
