We are looking for a Power System Engineer to join our dynamic team and work on cutting-edge projects in the GB and international power industry. The National HVDC Centre is owned and operated by SSEN Transmission but works with all the GB transmission companies. Opened in April 2017, the Centre is the national hub for HVDC modelling and simulation, knowledge exchange, and research. We use state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities to model and resolve complex issues before they impact on the delivery or operation of HVDC projects. Our globally recognised work helps to ensure the integrity and security of GB energy supplies as we transition to a net zero network. Key Responsibilities: - Explore HVDC Technologies: Dive into the fascinating world of HVDC. You'll conduct simulations to investigate performance, including real schemes connecting to the GB network. Utilise our state-of-the-art real-time simulation facilities and vendor-supplied hardware and models. - Lead and Communicate: Lead the delivery of projects for our stakeholders. Identify key insights that hold value and importance, and effectively communicate your findings through publications, technical reports, and engaging presentations. - Collaborative Innovation: Work closely with colleagues within the Centre and our valued partners. Together, we develop knowledge and capabilities in HVDC and related simulation tools by participating in world-leading research while helping to support the development, delivery, and operation of real-life HVDC projects. - Business Development: Enhance our reputation for excellence and our business functions as we grow to support GB industrys ambitious HVDC strategy. Assist in hosting and maintenance of HVDC replicas and other hardware in our world-class simulation and test facilities. - Shape the Industry: Engage with industry groups and innovation projects to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of HVDC technology. As we strive towards a net-zero network, become a recognised expert in one of the key subject areas of the Centre and help train the next generation of HVDC engineers. What We're Looking For: - We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences, from industry newcomers to globally renowned experts. If you possess the following, we'd love to hear from you: - Power System Analysis: Experience in power system analysis and its applications, especially EMT studies or real-time simulation. Experience with PSCAD, RSCAD-RTDS, or OPAL-RT software, as well as hardware-in-loop, is a plus. However, if you are new to these technologies, rest assured that we offer a nurturing environment to help you develop and enhance your skills. - Network Knowledge: Strong technical knowledge of the electricity transmission network, with understanding of core elements, ideally with a strong focus on HVDC or FACTS. - Effective Communication Skills: Ability to write clear, well-structured technical reports and convey complex technical subjects to various stakeholders. - Collaborative Drive: Motivation to work collaboratively with others, delivering outstanding results to meet the high standards expected of a world-leading organisation.
