Description Role: Assistant Professor – Photography & Digital Media (Teaching & Scholarship) Grade and Salary: Grade 7, £37,174 - £46,735 per annum (pro-rata) FTE and working pattern: 0.4FTE, 14hrs per week Holiday Entitlement: 33 days annual leave plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday) (pro-rata) Purpose of Role You will actively contribute to the development of our Fashion Branding and Promotion and Communication Design programmes, focusing specifically on photography and digital media in its most creative forms, and be experienced in learning, teaching and assessment at HE level. An enthusiastic and visionary academic who will support and encourage students to achieve their full potential, you will have the ability to develop innovative, collaborative projects and demonstrate a willingness to engage creatively in the wider activities of the school. You will be highly professional and a committed team player, flexible in approach with excellent communication, timekeeping and organisational skills and be willing to adapt to the duties associated with the role. You will possess a strong understanding of contemporary practice, issues and current debate within Photography and Digital Media. This will underpin your passion for enhancing your own practice and will inform you knowledge of the skills and attributes required by graduates for employability. Our indicative areas of teaching may include such subjects as photography, moving image, aspects of graphic design, creative digital media, and art direction amongst others. Given the broad nature of the subject, we may also expect you to contribute teaching of courses to other programmes from time to time. Key Duties & Responsibilities Learning and Teaching Undertake teaching duties in relation to courses appropriate to your area of knowledge (e.g. through practical sessions, lectures, seminars, tutorials) Contribute to the continued development of photography and digital media within Fashion Branding and Promotion and Communication Design programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level in consultation with the Programme Director of Studies and Head of Discipline Undertake scholarly activity related to the effective delivery of the curriculum and develop the level of your subject expertise in line with the latest developments in the discipline as appropriate. Contribute to the design and delivery of the curriculum in consultation with the programme team and within the structures and mechanisms established by the School and University. Conduct assessment and moderation across the discipline area, ensuring this is rigorous, fair and clear and undertaken within the policies established by the School and University. Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives. Be responsible for providing effective, well documented and timely feedback, both formative and summative, to students. Contribute to the monitoring of the quality of learning and teaching through course monitoring and to contribute to quality management and enhancement activities across the Programme, School and University. Provide appropriate pastoral support recognising the varied cultural backgrounds of the student cohort. Stay abreast of developments in the pedagogy of creative education and to ensure that these developments are reflected in the evolution of the learning and teaching methods employed on the Programmes. Planning, and authoring (or revising) new course material as part of the school’s teaching programmes. Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. Research and Knowledge Transfer Participation in institutional or inter- institutional collaborative research or involvement with industrial, commercial and third sector organisations and other institutions. Develop and maintain strong links with industrial partners. Undertake business development activities and/or consultancy as agreed and directed. Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism. Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into the course of study. Academic Management and Administration Undertake administrative duties associated with the programme and course planning, preparation for assessments and for examination/progression boards etc. Carry out the administration requirements of the role in accordance with normal University processes and procedures Take a proactive role both internally and externally in promoting and marketing the Programmes and the School Participate in recruitment and induction to the Programmes with which you are involved, ensuring compliance with the School and University targets Contribute to income generating activities including assisting with raising sponsorship as well as other activities that will raise the profile of the school External liaison to benefit subject area and student recruitment Represent the School in both the national and international context Prepare proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding and accreditation purposes. A postgraduate degree or PhD is desirable. A record of achievement in professional practice commensurate with appointment at this level Recognised teaching qualification, i.e. PGCert/PGCap or membership/fellowship of higher education academy. Or be committed to achieving this within 2 years of appointment. Well-developed knowledge and understanding of contemporary practice across the discipline and related areas. Evidence of working within photography and similar creative media industries.
