Job Description - Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist II, Shift Supervisor - Northeast Detention Program (24000AX1)
The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking dynamic, positive, and service-minded individuals to fill the role of Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist II (JJYDS II). The selected candidate will work with juvenile justice involved young people ages 12 – 20 years old (most of the youth served are 14 -18 years old) in DYS residential facilities. The role of the incumbent is to support the Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist I, located at the Northeast Detention Program, 33 Gregory Street, Middleton, MA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Observe the conduct and behavior of youth confined to the facility and take appropriate action to prevent disturbances and/or escapes, ensuring compliance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.
2. Maintain custodial care and control of youth to uphold order and security within the facility; ensure the security of staff and youth by making periodic rounds, head counts, and security checks.
3. Supervise and monitor the deployment of up to six (6) JJYDS I staff by checking duty stations and ensuring the completion of assigned tasks.
4. Assist the Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist III in their absence and assume responsibilities for the operation of the assigned shift.
5. Conduct intake of youth and complete appropriate documentation; document behavioral issues and complete incident reports and logs.
6. Provide crisis and behavior management to youth and facilitate group meetings to assist in developing coping skills.
7. Deliver leadership through role modeling and participation in staff meetings and training sessions.
8. Facilitate orientation of new staff and train staff on emergency response techniques.
Required Qualifications:
1. Ability to understand, explain, and apply laws, rules, and regulations governing assigned unit activities.
2. Knowledge of factors and trends in providing secure residential and rehabilitative care to youth.
3. Demonstrated ability to supervise and plan work assignments.
4. Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
5. Experience in establishing rapport with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience working with youth in residential care or rehabilitation.
2. Proven ability to interact with youth in a supportive manner.
3. Demonstrated program measurement and reporting skills.
Special Requirements:
1. Minimum Age Requirement: 21 years.
2. Physical ability to perform job requirements.
3. Valid motor vehicle driver’s license may be required based on assignment.
4. Must complete and maintain certifications in crisis intervention, CPR, AED, and first aid.
Working Conditions:
1. Exposure to verbal and/or physical confrontations.
2. Standard work week with potential for extended hours.
3. Travel may be required based on assignment.
Schedule:
4 Day work week: 2nd shift 1:00 pm – 11:00 pm with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday off.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) a high school diploma or equivalent and (B) one (1) year of experience in relevant fields.
Salary:
54,337.92 - 73,396.44 Yearly
