The Role
As the Database Administrator you will play a role in the internal IT team, providing support for live services and supporting the delivery of technology projects within Causeway.
This role will be responsible for overseeing a small but diverse set of databases that power our commercial products and internal systems. This will involve providing administration and maintenance work, performance tuning and monitoring and periodically testing the integrity of backups in line with operational resilience plans.
You will also be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving incidents and requests for SQL related issues and working on projects that require database knowledge.
The Database Administrator will also work closely with the Technical Architect and Group Architect to develop, maintain and govern design standards, architectural principles and blueprints, to ensure consistency and repeatability of technology usage across Causeway.
The role will report to the Head of IT Support.
Responsibilities
* Install, configure, and administer Microsoft SQL Server and Azure based database technologies.
* Proactively monitor the performance of databases and make recommendations for performance improvements.
* Provide third line support to investigate problems and identify issues related to databases, and recommend corrective actions.
* Implement and enforce security best practices for database, including access controls, and data encryption.
* Create and maintain tools to enable automation of database administration tasks.
* Contribute to the creation and maintenance of technical documentation and asset inventory, ensuring that information about Causeway’s technology estate is accurate and up to date.
* Contribute to the problem management process, continuing to mitigate root cause and the removal of repetitive processes.
* Experienced in administering relational databases (ideally SQL Server), including index tuning, capacity planning, backup and failover planning, and high availability configurations (e.g. clustering).
* Experience of using database level encryption, including setting up and managing encryption keys and secrets.
* Knowledge of administering object relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL.
* Knowledge of T-SQL and Powershell.
* Ability to self-manage and prioritise work.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as you will be working with third parties as well as other colleagues from within Causeway’s IT and Engineering teams.
* Commercial awareness with ability to balance trade-offs where necessary to ensure a successful delivery.
* The desire and motivation to stay up to date with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
* Attention to detail and able to produce high quality deliverables.
* Willingness to work occasionally out of hours, to support patching and upgrades.
* Working knowledge of cloud database services in at least one major public cloud provider (AWS, Azure or GCP).
* Knowledge of administering NoSQL databases, ideally MongoDB.
* An understanding of file-based database systems (e.g. ISAM).
* Experience with high availability database servers using Database mirroring and Clustering and Log Shipping.
* Analytics and ETL solutions (e.g. SSIS, Synapse, Databricks, Data Factory, etc.).
* Developing and managing Power BI reports.
* Knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations and standards, e.g. ISO 27001.
Skills
