Job overview

The post is for one year and is suitable for a person with UK anaesthetic and ICU experience. We have over 600 admissions a year. The duties of the post will be to provide care for patients working with intensive care medicine. Support for development in areas such as clinical audit and participation in unit research will be offered.
The department operates a full shift system and integrates Anaesthetic trainees, Clinical Fellows and Specialty Doctors on 1/7 rota which is EWTD compliant. The rota shift consists of long days, twilight shifts and weekend shifts. There is good senior support on the shop floor and close liaison with the anaesthetic department to ensure continuity of care.
Main duties of the job
Although this position does not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval for training recognition, it offers full teaching and training opportunities. The successful candidate will be allocated a named clinical and educational supervisor to oversee their development and career. They will also be assisted and encouraged to perform audit projects and participate in research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Anaesthetics Department is an integral part of the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics and Clinical Support and Division of Surgery and Women’s & Children’s Services whose responsibilities cover the provision of Anaesthetic Services, High Dependency and Intensive Care, Pain Relief and Palliative care, as well as the running of Operating Theatres, Recovery and CSSD. In addition, the hospital has an extra contractual Hyperbaric Chamber, an opportunity to be part of the Hyperbaric service could be considered by mutual arrangement.
Person specification
Experience
* A minimum of 4 years Anaesthetics experience in recognised posts
* Emergency, epidural and spinal anaesthesia
* Experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia
* Ability to work without direct supervision
* Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty.
* Ability to prioritise work effectively
* Evidence of appropriate experience and knowledge to the level of the Primary FRCA and/or evidence of CME/CPD from the preceding two years (including appraisal)
* Experience in invasive monitoring
* Willing to participate in hospital transfers
* Experience in Critical Care Medicine
* Willingness to extend knowledge by continued education
* Previous experience as Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia or similar for 2 years or more
* Experience of committee work/project management
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration
* ALS, APLS, ATLS or equivalent experience
* MBBS or equivalent
* Primary FRCA or equivalent
Training, audit, and research
* Experience of conducting clinical audit
* Willingness of using evidence base to support decision making
* Familiar with the principles of Risk Management
* Willing to become involved in Clinical Governance
* Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
* Involvement in research projects and published papers
