Principal Mechanical Engineer
Location: Huddersfield
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Rate: £50 PAYE or £65.98 Umbrella hourly rate - inside IR35
Contract Duration: 12 month contract
This is to work onsite at David Brown Defence carrying out work on behalf of BAES Subs.
Acting principally under the direction of the Technical Authority, the role involves working flexibly within the Engineering team on assigned gearbox design projects and associated product engineering activities. The scope of the tasks will primarily comprise the mechanical design and detailing of high integrity gearboxes, components, and assemblies, but will also include other supporting systems and equipment such as couplings, instrumentation, lubrication, materials selection, documentation, and test rig design as necessary. Liaison with other engineering team members and other DBS functional teams during project work is an integral part of the role.
Core Duties
1. Engineering design of geared transmission systems and components.
2. Develop designs and/or re-engineering of existing designs for new applications.
3. Design of test equipment and procedures for gearboxes.
4. Interpretation and comprehension of customer specifications and design standards including geometric tolerancing.
5. Work with and support other team members, including those in adjacent disciplines, including Analysis & Development. Lead engineering tasks on assigned projects.
6. Interpretation and comprehension of customer and Standards requirements (e.g., performance, safety conformance).
7. Create deliverable documentation including Proposals, Manuals, Installation and Maintenance instructions as necessary.
8. 2 & 3D CAD usage at expert level, Solid Edge preferred. Create component and assembly drawings. Drawing and technical documentation checking. BOM and gear data generation and engineering change control processing.
9. Technical liaison and problem solving with Production Engineering and Supply Chain teams.
10. Participation in DFMEA, PFMEA, and CI activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge:
1. Strong core design skills, competence in materials selection, gear rating (ideally, not essential at first appointment), shaft and bearing analysis, rotor dynamics, and other drive system elements including structural components, couplings, lubrication systems, relevant instrumentation, and control systems.
2. Good knowledge of manufacturing techniques.
3. Good knowledge of materials and processing techniques.
4. Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards and design protocols (ISO, AGMA, DIN, FKM, DNV for example).
5. Experienced in the application of Machinery Safety regulations and requirements.
6. SAP aware/user, in context of engineering design data specification.
Skills:
1. Ability to make well-informed data-driven decisions.

3. A strong sense of integrity.

Qualifications:
Minimum: Diploma with relevant experience. Preferred: Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
