Temporary Environmental Health Officer

Pay Rate: £19.35 per hour PAYE
Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours
Role Length: This opening assignment is for 2-3 months
City: Exeter, Devon
The purpose of the role is to assist the Environmental Health and Licensing Manager in providing a regulatory service and carrying out the Council’s statutory duties.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Investigation of complaints relating to business premises.
2. Carry out 100 inspections per officer.
3. Respond appropriately to requests for service in accordance with national and internal guidance and procedures.
4. Inspection, auditing, sampling or other appropriate intervention of commercial premises, processes and plant in order to establish the most satisfactory course of action in respect of enforcement.
5. Preparation and enforcement of statutory notices taking any action appropriate.
6. Monitoring of works being undertaken as a result of legal action.
7. The collection of evidence associated with contraventions of the legislation enforced by the Unit for use in court proceedings.
8. Attend court proceedings or other enquiries on behalf of Exeter City Council when required to do so.
9. The administration of national and localised schemes such as the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and Primary Authority Partnerships.
10. Appropriately respond to consultations from other sections within Exeter City Council and with external agencies in accordance with policies and procedures.
11. Undertake research, monitoring and provision of information and statistics as may be required to fulfil the duties required by the section.
Qualifications:
1. BSc/Diploma in Environmental Health and EHRB Certificate of Registration.
2. Additional professional qualification e.g. Diploma in Acoustics, Diploma in Air Pollution Control or equivalent relevant qualification. Numerate & literate desirable.
Skills & Experience:
1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
2. Practical experience in general environmental health enforcement.
3. Experience of letter writing.
4. Experience of dealing with complaints/enquiries from members of the public.
5. Experience in maintaining record systems and statutory enforcement procedures.
6. Experience in interviewing under caution and facilitating the completion of statements.
7. Experience or working within Environmental Health Services with a particular knowledge in the area or the work covered by the post e.g. noise/pollution/contaminated land.
8. Familiar with PACE, CPIA, RIPA and other Acts associated with investigations.
9. Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
