Oversight of respiratory assessment and care planning for CYP with complex respiratory needs across residential care and rehabilitation. Decision making responsibility in relation to complex respiratory care (e.g. changing ventilator settings, trialling one-way valves) working in a team around the child. Collaborate with the team around the child within rehabilitation, residential / school settings with particular focus on working in partnership with the respiratory physiotherapist. Collaborate with the Clinical Education Lead to develop and implement structured training programs for nursing staff, ensuring the workforce can confidently manage complex respiratory needs. Develop a system of continuous clinical support and knowledge sharing, ensuring that all staff are equipped to deliver evidence-based, high-quality respiratory care. Support staff who cover the Clinical Site Manager rota (CSMs) and other team leaders in the development of their respiratory care competencies, ensuring they can deliver care at the highest standard without relying on a single expert. Work in partnership with St Georges University Hospitals NHS Trust who provide external support and expertise to the Childrens Trust through a service level agreement. Work in partnership with community and tertiary centres to both coordinate admissions and discharges and ensure seamless communication with expert teams and timely decision making, seeking specialist guidance as required from external consultants (participation in initial referral screening assessments). Lead and manage onsite tracheostomy clinics on a house-by-house basis, ensuring accurate recording and documentation. Lead the acute management on site of any deteriorating child from a respiratory perspective. Work in partnership with the respiratory physiotherapist to ensure access for CYP to aquatic therapy for CYP with acute respiratory needs. Education and Training Develop, deliver, and review training programs that equip clinical teams with the necessary skills to manage respiratory support, including non-invasive and long-term ventilation, and tracheostomy care. Regularly assess the training needs of the clinical teams and adjust training content to address gaps in knowledge and skills. Provide mentorship and support to junior nurses and clinical leads, fostering a culture of continuous professional development within the respiratory care team. Deliver parent and carer education programs to empower families and ensure they are confident in managing their childs respiratory needs at home. Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance Lead the creation, review, and implementation of clinical protocols and care pathways for managing complex respiratory cases, ensuring they reflect best practice and national guidelines. Develop and maintain evidence-based respiratory care guidelines in collaboration with the team around the child and ensure they are regularly updated to reflect clinical developments. Conduct clinical audits to assess the effectiveness of respiratory care provided, ensuring continuous improvement in care delivery. Oversee the documentation and record-keeping process to ensure high standards of care are being met across all respiratory cases. Work in partnership with the team around the child to review and incorporate national standards into practice, ensuring that clinical delivery is aligned with current best practices. Ensure standards of respiratory equipment are maintained across site and be the point of contact for queries and advice in relation to specialist equipment as well as specialist stock control. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): 1. Training Effectiveness: Achieve a 90% or higher competency rate among nursing staff in respiratory care following training programs. 2. Staff Upskilling: Demonstrate an increase in the number of clinical leads and staff across the team reporting confidence in managing respiratory cases independently. 3. Quality of Care: Ensure 100% of children with complex respiratory needs have updated and accurate care protocols and care plans in place. 4. Audit Compliance: Conduct quarterly audits on respiratory service delivery, with actionable improvements implemented within one month of audit findings. 5. Family Empowerment: Ensure 95% of families and carers report feeling confident in managing respiratory care at home after education sessions. 6. Feedback and Impact: Regular positive feedback from clinical staff and MDT members on the effectiveness of educational support and clinical leadership provided by the Respiratory Nurse Lead.
