Job Summary To work with the Chief CMR Technologist to ensure the provision of a high-quality service by the CMR department at Royal Brompton Hospital, meeting the needs of referrers and maintaining high standards of patient care. To provide a high quality CMR scanning service for the purpose of diagnosis or research. To promote and maintain the highest standards of patient care within the trust. To deputise for senior colleagues when required To be part of a team continually committed to improving the service to patients and promoting the hospital nationally and internationally To work flexible hours (scanners operating 12 hours/day) and seven day working Main Tasks and Responsibilities Patient /Customer Care (both direct and indirect) To undertake scanning procedures within the CMR unit. To work flexibly to allow 12 hour/day operation of the scanners and seven day working To undertake procedures as part of research projects To liaise with CMR medical staff in the planning of investigations. To carry out IV cannulation for the purpose of administering Magnetic Resonance contrast agents. To assess CMR scans for quality and for clinical significance and to takeappropriate action where necessary. To initiate and assist in patient resuscitation in an emergency. To clear up after biological or other spills in accordance with the Trusts infection control policy. To use initiative and judgement in the prioritising of workload, taking into accountmultiple clinical factors. To participate in regular continuing professional development includingattendance at CMR Unit teaching lectures and technologist training sessions. Other duties in the CMR unit will be under the guidance of the Director. Policy Development To assist the Chief Technologist in drawing up procedures and policies related to CMR scanning. To maintain and recommend improved standards of CMR technique and patient care. To maintain high professional standards as described in the Standards of Conduct,Performance and Ethics, and to comply with the Standards of Proficiency for Radiographers as set out by the Health Professionals Council. Service development To undertake to be trained to the required standards and to maintain those standards. To be involved with the implementation of service developments for the CMR unit. To be actively involved in MR safety planning within the CMR department. To liaise with the medical consultants in the planning of investigations, and the introduction of new techniques and equipment within the CMR department. Together with the Chief Technologist to be responsible for your own continued professional development. To ensure the departmental quality assurance programme is effectively managed. To suggest and assist with the implementation of service developments within the CMR unit. People Management To deputise for senior colleagues in their absence To share responsibility for co-ordinating the staff to receive visitors to the unit, and to demonstrate the functions of any equipment in its working environment. To supervise the work of any more junior radiographers, undergraduateradiographers, visiting radiographers or doctors, clerical and portering staff within the unit. To assist in the recruitment of new staff members as necessary, in accordance with the trusts recruitment procedures. To be responsible for the induction, training and supervision of all radiographic staff within the CMR unit. To formally teach and assist in the practical training of all radiographers,undergraduate radiographers and other staff working in the CMR unit. To be responsible for ensuring that undergraduate radiographers or visiting radiographers working practice complies with all statutory/local safety regulations. To organise workload, and co-ordinate porters to bring patients to the department at the correct times. To assist with the staff appraisals, and that staff members have a meaningful appraisal/personal development plan that includes feedback to the individual from a selection of internal customers and team members. To co-ordinate training program for radiographers within the CMR department and to assist them in maintaining for Continuing Professional Development. Communication To train radiographers and undergraduate radiographers in the use of MRI scanning equipment, and in CMR scanning techniques and procedures. To assist and supervise the IV cannulation training in the CMR unit. To advise others concerning MR safety issues. To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. To communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and other members of staff. To explain procedures and reassure patients in order to gain their cooperation. There can often be barriers to understanding to overcome, and patients are often very anxious and require persuasion before and during a procedure. To use tact and sensitivity when asking personal questions, for example checking pregnancy status before examinations. To reassure and explain to patients who may have concerns regardingclaustrophobia in order to gain their cooperation. To assist the chief technologist in liaising with engineers, and medical physics, and reorganising of workload when equipment malfunctions. Resource Management To use complex and expensive MRI scanning equipment safely and responsibly. To report all equipment malfunctions to the chief technologist, and if necessary undertake any further action to ensure the safe operation of the faulty unit. To undertake equipment testing as part of the departmental Quality Assurance program, and to take appropriate action if the results are outside of pre-set tolerances. Information management To supervise the import and export of confidential image data. To ensure that all statistics and records are maintained as required by the Headof Radiographic Services. To accurately input data to the Hospital Information System. Other Duties To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested. Conflict of interests You may not without the consent of the Trust engage in any outside employment. In accordance with the Trusts conflict of interest policy, you must declare to your manager all private interests, which could potentially result in personal gain as a consequence of your employment in the Trust. Interests that might appear to be in conflict should also be declared to your manager. In addition, the NHS Code of Conduct and Standards of Business Conduct for NHS Staff (HSG 93/5) requires you to declare all situations where you or a close relative or associate has a controlling interest in a business (suck as a private company, public organisation or other NHS voluntary organisation) or in any activity which may compete for any NHS contracts to supply goods or services to the Trust. You must therefore register such interests with the Trust, either on appointment or subsequently whenever such interests are gained. You should not engage in such interests without the written consent of the Trust, which will not be unreasonably withheld.
