The Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group (MitoCAMB) studies the genetic basis and mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases, including mitochondrial eye diseases, and other rare inherited neurological disorders, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and spastic ataxias. Our aim is to provide a precise diagnosis and to discover new treatments. Our research programme aims to better understand the mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases and other neurodegenerative/neuromuscular diseases, and to develop new and effective treatments for affected patients through investigator-led experimental medicine studies, novel gene therapy approaches, and clinical trials in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry. The post-holder will conduct a short-term project of clinical research focused on the natural history of rare mitochondrial disorders, whilst supporting ongoing academic-led biomarker studies, experimental medicine and early phase clinical trials in other mitochondrial disorders within the Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group MitoCamb, and the new National Rare Disease Centre funded by LifeArc. This is a unique opportunity to prepare and obtain preliminary data for a clinical PhD or carry out a period of postdoctoral research focused on translating scientific discoveries into novel treatments for rare mitochondrial disorders. Applicants will need to demonstrate a commitment to patient confidentiality, be prepared to acquire knowledge and skills essential for effective research governance and act at all times to the highest professional standards.
