Job Responsibilities:
* Obtains and maintains appropriate knowledge and understanding of the care and services provided by Community Hospice, including values, policies, and procedures of the Community Hospice Pharmacy.
* Follows established departmental rules, procedures, policies, quality-improvement objectives, environmental, safety, and infection control standards.
* Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician II position which may include:
1. Entering orders into computerized patient profile for pharmacist verification.
2. Maintaining patient demographic and medication profiles in computer systems.
3. Providing non-clinical drug information, such as available dosage forms and strengths, costs, and package sizes to patients, nurses, and physicians.
4. Keeping files, records, and communication organized.
5. Answering telephone calls within three (3) rings.
6. Repackaging, labeling, handling, and storing pharmaceuticals.
7. Measuring and mixing to compound and reconstitute medication.
8. Using and maintaining equipment and facilities.
9. Ordering drugs from wholesaler and receiving drugs into pharmacy stock.
10. Maintaining Schedule II drug usage log and inventory count.
11. Maintains a working knowledge of all aspects of pharmacy services identified below:
12. Medical terminology and abbreviation common to prescribing and dispensing.
13. Drug names and classification.
14. Medication order and prescription interpretation.
15. Basic pharmaceutical calculations.
16. Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of controlled and non-controlled substances.
17. Aseptic technique and preparation procedures for sterile dosage forms.
18. Demonstrates the ability to maintain input of a minimum of 80% of the average number of prescriptions per hour demonstrated by the Lead Technician with no error.
19. Performs aseptic compounding of sterile parenteral admixtures.
20. Triages orders, determines priorities, and processes orders appropriately.
21. Notifies the pharmacist and management of any unusual situations, occurrences, conditions, or complaints related to drugs.
22. Facilitates the safe and efficient transport of medications and supplies.
23. Demonstrates the ability to work independently regarding the functions and tasks for the operation of the pharmacy.
24. Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees.
25. Interacts effectively with other members of the health care team on a regular basis.
26. Operates technology (computers, EyeCon, Smart Cabinet) in accordance with policy and procedures.
27. Performs the essential functions related to opening and closing the pharmacy.
28. Uses appropriate telephone communication skills and effectively communicates with patients, nurses, physicians, and other co-workers.
29. Performs other tasks as assigned.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
* Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Florida Department of Health.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
* Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
* Graduate from an approved pharmacy technician training program.
* Possess a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency.
* Minimum one (1) year experience in retail and/or institutional pharmacy.
* Successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician I probationary period.
Knowledge of:
* Medical terminology and abbreviation common to prescribing and dispensing.
* Drug names and classification.
* Medication order and prescription interpretation.
* Basic pharmaceutical calculations.
* Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of controlled and non-controlled substances.
* Aseptic technique and preparation procedures for sterile dosage forms.
Skilled at:
* Good written and verbal English communication skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
* Must be adaptable and resourceful, able to cope with change and develop alternative solutions to problems.
* Computer use, including rudimentary skills such as keyboard and mouse, ability to utilize software programs, email, and internet.
* Excellent typing and spelling skills.
Professional Development:
* Completes continuing education credits sufficient to maintain registration with the Florida Department of Health.
* Complies with accepted ethical conduct and professional standards of pharmacy practice as set forth by the Florida Board of Pharmacy.
