I have been assigned by an NHS Trust in the UK to help them recruit a Consultant in Anaesthetics & ITU on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months.
Our client's Department of Anaesthesia is based on the first floor, adjacent to the operating theatres, with secretarial support available in this office. The Intensive Care Unit is located on the fourth floor, providing Level 2 and 3 care. The ICU supports anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgeries. The Critical Care Directorate office is located alongside the intensive care unit. All offices are equipped with modern facilities. The operating theatres have rest rooms and a seminar room, shared by nursing and medical staff. A modern, well-equipped trainee's area is available for trainees.
A comprehensive anaesthetic service is available for all routine and emergency surgical procedures for in-patients and day-case patients in the following specialties: General surgery and vascular surgery, Urology, Orthopaedic surgery and spinal surgery, Gynaecology and routine and high-risk obstetrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dental and Maxillo-Facial Surgery & High-risk anaesthetic assessment clinic and CPET service.
The appointee will be asked to undertake various duties, including:
1. Maintain and promote multi-disciplinary teamwork within the specialty and those associated with the critical care services.
2. Share responsibility with all consultant colleagues for providing evidence-based standards of care for all patients.
3. Take an active part in formal teaching, practical training & supervision of junior staff.
4. Assume responsibility for professional supervision and management of non-consultant grade medical staff.
5. Monitor junior staff locum arrangements where appropriate.
6. Concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal, of their trainees.
7. Participate in risk management, governance activities, and other activities in the directorate.
8. Contribute (in cooperation with the Audit Committee) regularly to the clinical audit process undertaken within the Trust and, where appropriate, at a broader regional and national level.
