We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive ophthalmologist to join our Glaucoma Consultant team to support and develop the expanding Glaucoma services at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre. The appointee will be expected to have an interest in Glaucoma. Applications are welcomed from candidates who are wishing to expand their skills in glaucoma medically and surgically. In addition, applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are interested in cataract and general ophthalmology. BMEC has an ophthalmic local training programme OLT, which we encourage our doctors to work towards if required. This job is a substantive job.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join a team of 5 substantive glaucoma consultants, and you are expected to take an active role in the management of medical and surgical glaucoma after training in a diverse population and be involved in teaching medical students, other medical staff and Optometrists.
The Glaucoma department at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) currently works across a number of hospital sites providing Outpatient clinics in Sandwell and City Health sites with inpatient and day case treatment being carried out currently at BMEC located on the City Site. The post holder could participate in the on-calls when required at the emergency department in BMEC; however, this post has no on-call commitment.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide glaucoma ophthalmic advice and receive referrals during routine hours.
About us
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continue your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives
