Senior Health Care Support Worker - Norfolk Ward
An exciting, substantive opportunity has arisen within Norfolk Ward for a Senior Health Care Support Worker.
You should have attained the Level 3 qualification and have demonstrable experience of caring for acutely unwell patients in a hospital setting. You should possess good communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work in a calm and methodical manner. The successful candidate will have recent, up-to-date proven evidence of development. Norfolk Ward is a 22-bedded gastroenterology ward. We care for acutely unwell patients. The ward is staffed by an experienced and dedicated team of nurses, health care assistants, and allied health professionals, caring for a range of emergency and elective patients undergoing a variety of Gastroenterology investigations and procedures.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Main duties of the job
1. To assist in the delivery of care planned and assessed by the Registered Nurses.
2. To carry out care / other duties under indirect supervision.
3. To supervise junior health care assistants making a contribution to their training and development.
4. To undertake specific extended skills and assessor training in order to assess and sign off competencies within the scope of the role.
5. Support care day-to-day for all patients in the clinical area under indirect supervision.
6. Contribute to resource management.

Job responsibilities
1. Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and coordinating the assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating of individual patients' needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care from admission to discharge.
2. To manage, under indirect supervision, own workloads within the clinical area and competencies of the post.
3. Carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording, and reporting all changes in patients' condition to senior staff.
4. To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording, and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
5. To carry out observations of skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all findings to senior staff.
6. To complete documentation for manual handling charts, to be assessed by registered staff.
7. To recognise the importance of health education and teaching of patients and carers, and to be able to advise and refer patients on where to access information.
8. Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a registered practitioner.
9. To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise his/her role within the work area.
10. To participate in the training and development of junior staff on the ward and participate in the supervision and support of trainee Health Care Assistants.
11. Act as a mentor to new health Care Assistants & HCA Trainees, participating in induction programs and ongoing development of their practice.
12. To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families, and colleagues.
13. To participate in the development and implementation of ward area policy and nursing strategies.
14. To supervise and share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment on the ward and stock control.
15. To respect the confidential information, in line with the Trust policy Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.
16. To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues, and patients.
17. Report untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies to senior staff.
18. Following patient assessment by Registered Staff, undertake extended skills specific to individual competence under the indirect supervision of Registered staff.

Knowledge & Experience
* Demonstrable experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting.
* Be able to work as a member of a team.
* Demonstrable experience of time management and prioritising work.
* Understands and is committed to a caring approach to patients & relatives.
Qualifications
* One of the following Level 3 (SCQF - 6): - City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma, or demonstrable experience equivalent to the above qualifications.
* Level 2 Functional skills in English and Math's, or equivalent.
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (that maps to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker).
* Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal.
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately.
