As the Divisional Director of Nursing for Medicine, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of clinical services as a member of the triumvirate. With direct accountability for the leadership of nursing colleagues, you will also lead on quality governance (with the Divisional Director of Medicine), patient experience, vulnerable people, infection prevention and control, and nursing workforce and education. Therefore, you will need to possess exceptional communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills and a proven track record of managing complex budgets and delivering key quality and access standards.

Main duties of the job
* To be responsible for the effectiveness of professional leadership and development of nursing within the division and other allocated areas in order to facilitate the delivery of excellent clinical practice.
* To assist the Chief Nurse and other members of the Executive team with a range of strategic and operational activities in relation to the nursing workforce and its roles, behaviour and structure to ensure that safe and high-quality patient care is provided consistently and improved across the Trust in line with Trust objectives and requirements.
* To ensure that the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively within own allocated division and departments and that competence in clinical practice is both developed and maintained in order to maximise the patient experience, safety and quality of service.
* To provide clinical and professional advice to the Executive team and on a day-to-day basis to senior managers within the Trust as required.
* To assist the Chief Nurse in implementing the corporate nursing agenda, taking a specific strategic lead where requested via the allocated corporate component of the role.
* To participate in the senior nurse rota and deputise for the Chief Nurse internally and externally.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Master's degree in Nursing or health-related field, studying towards a Masters or evidence of working at this level
* Registered Nurse Part 1,2,12 or Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or other Allied Health Profession degree
* Teaching qualification or evidence of significant experience (recognised by the NMC)
* Management qualification - NEBs, CMS, DMS etc. Some form of management qualification is highly desirable
Knowledge
* Significant experience working at a Matron/Clinical Manager level
* Clinical and management experience at Band 8A or above during which the knowledge & skills defined below have been achieved
* Able to demonstrate effective consolidation of clinical knowledge & practice during working as Band 8 and its application to deliver improvement
* Demonstrable experience of achieving changed clinical practice and improving services to increase quality and efficiency
* Demonstrable experience of effective budgetary management
* Demonstrable experience of effective staff/HR management
* Evidence of involvement in service users' advocacy and complaints resolution
Specific Skills
* Demonstrates evidence of well-developed clinical practice. Able to advise on and implement improvements to the quality and efficiency of care for patients in wards/ units and specialities across medicine
* Strong organisational skills - able to organise own workload and take responsibility for own clinical actions and systems/standards across area of responsibility
* Highly effective communication skills - able to communicate verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict & distress, ensuring that communication is tailored to the person being addressed
* Able to maximise leadership skills in Clinical Managers, Matrons, Nurse Consultants and the wider team so all nursing and multidisciplinary staff are managed effectively through effective standard-setting, monitoring, feedback, appraisal, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice
