Purpose
We are recruiting for a Lead Software Engineer to act as the Technical Lead and guide the build, configuration, validation, and maintenance of internally developed/configured applications & products within a Retail Technology business area. This role will support the migration of applications to the cloud (Azure) as part of an ongoing transformation project.
Job Role Key Accountabilities
Core planning & delivery activity
1. Collaborate with Value Stream to define implementation options for technical change and translate technical change Epics into Features for Engineering teams.
2. Lead and drive refinement of technical Features with Software Engineering teams.
3. Provide peer review and sign off for completed Features ensuring delivery is in accordance with ‘Definitions of Done’ and ‘Conditions of Acceptance’.
4. Ensure delivery of technical Features complies with relevant architectural, security, and Engineering standards.
5. Lead the technical planning and coordination of multi-team/complex production releases/deployments.
6. Support Engineering teams with single-team production releases/deployments and root cause analysis.
7. Support Software Engineering teams with technical problem solving and incident resolution.
8. Use mentoring & coaching techniques to enable Software Engineering teams to gain technical confidence and competence.
Technical standards and practice leadership
1. Evolve and shape the Engineering standards, principles, practices, and roadmaps.
2. Encourage, mentor, and coach Engineering Team members to develop their skills.
3. Maintain and refine technical debt backlogs; identify and implement technical debt reduction opportunities.
4. Manage software library & tooling dependencies and influence approval/selection mechanisms.
5. Support Software Engineering Managers in assessing standards and practices maturity.
6. Use metrics to track improvements and enhance the software engineering process.
7. Foster innovation within teams by introducing new ways of working, embracing a DevSecOps/CALMS model culture.
Technical and operational documentation
Ensure that technical documentation is up-to-date, accurate, and sufficiently detailed.
Maintain competence
Maintain your own technical leadership competence and personal development.
Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Qualification
Demonstrable skills in the following:
1. DevOps, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (Azure DevOps preferable).
2. Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Excellent technical coaching and mentoring skills.
4. Sound problem analysis and resolution skills.
5. Strong knowledge of technical excellence practice and DevOps/CALMS methodologies.
6. Understanding of Agile delivery processes/methodologies.
7. Understanding of the products and services provided by Just (desirable).
Experience
1. Proven technical thought leadership and DevOps/CALMS best practice.
2. Experienced in developing and deploying scalable, secure, and highly available cloud applications.
3. Proven experience of embedding security, performance, availability, and maintainability aspects in delivery.
4. Experience with IT development processes and delivery lifecycles.
5. Experience working within an Agile environment.
6. Familiarity with Test Automation tools and the delivery of automated testing solutions.
Qualification
Educated to Degree level (or equivalent experience/qualification) or Computer science related qualification. ISEB/ISTQB Certificate in Software Testing is desirable.
